Line tangling around tip of rod

Featured Replies

Just wondering what technique everyone used to free up their line when it got all fouled up around their rod when they are fishing.  is it faster to take the time and set the but of the rod at your feet and unwrap it with your lure in hand? Do you roll the rod in your hands to untangle your wraps? or do you keep your rod extended and whip your lure around in circles trying to untangle the mess?

first try and unravel it with rod, then if that doesnt work, pick it out.

PREVENT: dont get so much line twist, sometimes that causes even more tangles on rod tips

I usually raise my arm high and keep the tip down and just shake it. 9/10 it works for me.

I would guess you're using braided line :-??  That's typical of braid and one of the reasons why I won't use it.  I just know a heavy Bass is going to strike while that braid is wrapped arond the tip and if that happens;  broken rod .................

To give my answer, I'd place the rod's butt back behind me and unwrap the line with my free hand..............quickly :).

That's usually an indication that it's time to replace the rod and reel.  I'll normally just snap the tip off if it happens too often on a trip.  No biggee.  ;)

The quoted method above works well.

Like LR says, this will happen alot with braided line.  Refining your technique can improve this alot.  A side jerking movement will cause this to happen the most.  If you can get the action you want while holding the rod at a different angle to the water then this can be reduced quite a bit.  I've moved to shorter rods for my jerkbaits and walkers etc.  I can hold the rod almost straight down and work the bait without the line wrapping around the tip.  If you try different things and conciously work at it for a little while, it soon becomes second nature.  I hardly ever have that trouble anymore.
