Is it too early?

Featured Replies

Is it too early go go out fishing for bass or do they like it a bit warmer lake? I say it's about 60F outside.

no, you can catch bass year round.  Get out there because the bite can be very productive right now.  You might have to slow down your presentation a bit if the water is chilly, but trust me they will bite.

I've lived in New Jersey most of my life, and 'now' is a great time to be bass fishing.

May is the spawning peak, but many of the biggest bass of the year are taken in April.

Not at all. I don't think it's ever too early unless your lake is iced over and you don't ice fish. Water temperature is what bass pay attention to, caring less how comfortable you are up there. Even in cold water bass feed all winter, but far less frequently. As the temp rises their metabolism raises and they feed more often, digesting food quicker, and their gluttony kicks in. Then when water gets hot their metabolism begins shutting down again and they are less active, so it's best to find the coolest water, deeper water, or shade from trees along the shoreline, river and creek bottoms, deep ledges, overhanging bluffs, thick laydowns, and under heavy mats of vegetation.

Slow down and scale down.

For instance, a T-rigged Zoom Finesse Worm with a 1/16oz bullet sinker.
