Temp change

Featured Replies

I am getting ready to take a 5 day fishing trip to a lake in NC.  I noticed that the temps have been in the mid 70's and it looks like starting tomorrow through Tuesday they might not even break 70.  I am just wondering if I need to change my tactics since the bass are still in Prespawn or spawn?    Will this 5-10 degree drop really slow them down.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, Dugout ;)

Air temperature is not a problem until it affects the water temperature, then it's everything.

A 5 to 10-degree short-term drop in air temperature shouldn't affect more than

the first foot or two of shallow water. At worst, it may mean that bass in a positive mood

are in water that's a foot or two deeper.

Dugout,

   Welcome to forum.

Welcome to the club. As long as air temp doesn't drive water temp to 59 any males guarding eggs will remain on post. Their metabolism slows down if water cools, so they might not be as aggressive there, but they won't leave eggs just because they are uncomfortable. A male can take the cooler water fine, but eggs would die and he'd "know" it. If water temp is falling to the low 60's and mating hasn't started, both male & female will go back deeper, the male abandoning a fanned out bed ready for eggs, retuning when temps stabilize aroud 65. The peak of spawn is around 72. Females will continue feeding before and after mating, while the male will remain neutral about feeding.
