Post Spawn

Featured Replies

The spawn is coming to a close by me (New York) and I was wondering what some of your techniques are for catching fish in the post spawn?

I am planning on working the drop offs on the edge of the spawning flats with spinner baits, soft jerk baits, and jigs.  I am also going to target wood and other structure located on the edge or on deep water.

Any other ideas that have worked for you in the past?

You have the right idea, just find those routes that bass took from deeper water to flats. A lot of techniques work around this time

Remember that the shallows will be full of fry, and blue gills, perch are next to spawn after the bass has finished.   Bass normally won't travel far to rest and then begin to catching up on some easy meals like the egg stealing blue gills.   Shad and perch colors are good starting points.

I have been fishing post spawn fish for a few weeks. The fish I have been targeting are close to deeper water but still are accessible to the shallows. The first deep points next to the shallow flats have been paying off.

I usually fish any drop-off, ledge, or point that is near a spawning flat. I comb these areas carefully with sow moving baits like weightless senkos, small jigs, c-rigged sweet beavers, and maybe even a drop-shot rig. Basically I try to find areas that will hold a good concentration of fish and I work them slowly with high percentage baits.

If you like topwater action (who doesn't), the post-spawn kicks it off.

Thanks for all the feedback!  It is always nice to hear all the different opinions and in some instances get reinsurance that what you thinking/doing is correct!

Rolo, you took the words right out of my mouth with your last post!!  I had a pickerel hit a top water bait last week, although it wasn't a bass what a thrill it is to be in clear water and see the fish come up to hit the bait!!!  It reminds me of a scene out of JAWS!!!!

Pickerel are a Blast! :o

I'm probably one of the few anglers who actually targets chain pickerel as a break from bass,

when I lived in Jersey and now in Florida.

There a blast until they destroy the finish on your hard baits or chew up your plastics with their teeth!!

rolo nailed w/ the topwater bite is the best all yr. right after spawn. the bass havent moved to the deeper water yet and are super aggressive once they recover and are looking to feed.they are still protecting their fry and are reactive and the topwater gets em excited.
