Techniques for Warm and Clear Water?

Featured Replies

I have been fishing for bass for three seasons now, fall,  winter, and spring.  It took me awhile before I could figure out how to catch them.  I read article after article, tried all different types of baits, and finally in the last month, I started catching bass somewhat regurlarly.  I fished a small laked three weeks ago and did OK.  The lake was gin clear and the water temp was 65.  I went there again today and the lake was again clear, but the water temp was 77.  My fishfinder picked up several schools of bass passing by and they were suspended at 10 to 15 feet.  I got a little closer to the banks and I could see large bass swimming around at about 4 to 8 feet.  This lake has a maximum depth of 30 feet with no hard structure, only weeds and a very gradually sloping bottom.  It is always gin clear.  I threw everything I had at them and could not get a bite.  Does anyone have any tips for fishing a warm, gin clear, gradually sloping lake that only has weeds for cover?

sounds tough, and in this type of situation, i would drop-shot finesse sized plastics, being as realistic as possible.  i would start on the outside edge of the weeds and work torwards the bank, moving slowly.  my second choice would be a small diving minnow stlye bait (a megabass smolt 70 in  a bass pattern instanly comes to mind) worked slow close to the weeds.  thats what i would try if i were in that situation.

My lake, Bull Shoals, Arkansas is usually gin clear with the average visibility from 20 to 40 feet deep with almost all rock structure. Kana gave you some good advise on finesse and having your baits be as realistic in size, color, a action as possible. As much as I like to catch bass on artificials sometimes if you want to catch fish you have to use that dreaded thing called live bait. You might be able to catch your own out of the lake you are going to fish if that is legal there. Best of luck and let us know how you are doing!

Like the others said downsizing to finesse presentations is a good idea.  Something else you may want to try, if your schedule allows it, is to fish during low light periods or at night.

I would take the advice from above and combine it with trying a smaller diameter line in fluoro or clear mono.  Also, when possible, make longer casts... if you can see them, they can see you.
