Night Fishing

Featured Replies

Hey guys I wanted to know how you fidh at night for large mouth. I have always fished for Catfish at night never Lg bass.  What do you use for night fishing i.e lures.

We have some ponds that we fish with buzzbaits at night.  It is some of the best action in the world and sometimes these explosions will scare the heck out of you.  I alos like black spinnerbaits.

5/8 oz black Jitterbug, Hula Popper, and buzzbaits are my go to baits.  If that doesn't produce, I'll try a 1/2 oz black single Colorado blade spinnerbait or a 1/4 oz jig and pig.  Clear water lakes are best.

Since feeding by sight is reduced you have to appeal to the other senses, sound, vibration, scent, taste, requiring noisy and dark colored baits prefereably with scent attractant. A rattling jig will do, draged over a rocky bottom. Topwaters, crankbaits, and even worms with tails that displace a lot of water. Many of the largest bass only come up shallow in daylight during the spawn, not to be seen again, but some of the deepest most mature bass will travel shallow to feed in the darkness. returning deep by dawn. I can't over-emphasize quietness in the boat, though loud lure entries are fine at night, as bass are used to lots of things slapping the water, including beavers. Bass often jump right on a heavy splashng lure. Some anglers leave when a beaver shows up, but I follow them. They stir bottom up and make a mess that attracts fish. Above all, remember it isn't like sitting in a boat working catfish. When bassing you will probably be standing and walking around more while casting, so keep the PFD on. The chances of falling and striking your head on the boat before going over are high. File a float plan with friend or family and stick to it. Make sure you have plenty of flashlight and al the other minimums you already practice catfishing.

To add to what Ouchita said, keep the clutter in your boat to a minimum. You don't need a bunch of rods and stuff lying around to trip you up and make noise.

I pretty much fish the same way as I do in day light, just change to darker lures.   I absolutely try not to turn on any white light, it takes about 20 minutes for regain your night vision after looking at a white light.  You will soon come to hate cat fishermen and crappie fishermen with all their lights and their big Q-beams.   You will also want to black out all your guages, those will feel like spot lights at night.  I use black lights and flourecent lines, makes tying knots a breeze also.  I keep one small LED flashlight with a red filter in the boats glove box so it's easy to find and a head band lamp in the boat.  These are used when you happen to get a hook in something you need to see how to get it out, like a hand, leg or clothing.  The only time I turn on my nav lights are when another boat is coming or have to make a long run.    This brings up one major word of caution when you first start.  KNOW THE WATERS YOUR GOING TO FISH LIKE THE BACK OF YOUR HAND everything is going to be totally different at night and you'll be surprized at how much different it's going to feel.  I used to run 15 - 20 miles in pitch black at 40 mph just using the tree lines against the dark sky as markers to go by before the days of GPS.

Flipping worms and jigs around submerged cover,  casting dark/black single colorado spinner baits in the shallows, plastic worms/lizards in four - five feet of water or shallow cranks.  I seldom fish water more than five feet deep and fish a lot of water only a few inches deep.   As mentioned, top waters water good also.  There is nothing on earth that can scare the tee-tatal crap out of you any more than having big bass bust a jitterbug or buzz bait just as your lifting it out of the water beside the boat

I'd suggest that you check out the articles on this site.  Plenty of articles on night fishing.  Some good info there.

I like to fish slow at night.  I use a hollow body frog in white.  It shows up better for me to see, and the bass seem to like it just fine.

Recently I have caught a few good ones on a dark pumpkin chatterbait.

Jigs are always a good choice, and if you have a big bladed spinnerbait thats another winner.

My favorite nogh bait of all time is a 5/8oz. black jitterbug. Throw it along stumps and shallow wood and just wait for the frightening explosions. My buddy's dad has fished with a black jitterbug exclusively at night for 15+ years and has caught 12 10+lb. fish.  :o

Crankbaits produce. Darker colored spinnerbaits.

My goto bait is a 10-12" plastic worm in black neon or junebug.
