Probing the waters

Featured Replies

Is it a normal technique to try and probe the waters to see where the fish are. For example:

Throwing out a Plastic worm and letting it go to the bottom and slowly working it along the bottom trying to get a strike. Trying that ends up with nothing so you try the middle of the water column with a crankbait for suspended fish, and if that dont work then you work more towards the surface with a floater/diver or even a topwater. Guess a spinnerbait would work for this technique because it can be used in all depths...correct?

Guess that my thinking is that where ever you get most bites is most likely where the fish are at in the water column...Am I correct in my reasoning? Also I dont have a boat or any kind of electronics and bank fishing is my only option, would the technique described above work?

The approach that you described is perfectly normal, but you might want to rearrange your sequence.

On average, the most aggressive bass typically lie in shallower water. For this reason,

it's usually best to fish the shallow water first, making casts that parallel the shoreline.

Then gradually increase your cast angle off the shore, by fancasting into deeper and deeper water.

A complete answer to your question would naturally fill a book, so I can only scratch the surface.

It's often said that a spinnerbait can be fished in any depth water, but a spinnerbait is a far cry

from being the "best bait" in every water depth. For covering the bottom of the lake,

you'd be much better off using something like a T-rigged worm with a bullet sinker.

Incidentally, not having a boat is not a huge disadvantage. I own three boats,

but some of my most memorable outings took place when I was hoofing the bank ;)
