RW/gang- Smallie Feeding Question

Featured Replies

I know smallmouth's like feeding in low light conditions, but what about dark dark? The sun is coming up now around 7:00am. We have a full or new moon (can't remember) friday and saturday. (Also showed great times to go fishing from the solunar table.)

If I were to go fishing say at 5am (on the water that is) do you think my chances would be good with poppers/jigs/hula grubs etc? I don't have a boat, so it would be fishing from the bank. Last fall I caught a nice smallie from the bank but it was later into fall....it was also right at sun up, not dark. I also have some cat eyes I use on my hat.

This particular place is very deep from the bank, super clear water, I would beat the crowd, and then once the sun got up, I could drive shortly to another lake to day fish for largemouth's.

Please give me your thoughts.

Thanks

You can catch smallmouth anytime of day or night. In the South, fishing is much better at night during the summer, that's when most of the smallies are caught on the big name reserviors, Dale Hollow for example. Low light is probably better for topwater and jerkbaits, much like largemouth fishing.

Thanks RW. I kind of thought they did, but when fishing for smallies, I have never really fished in the dark per se, it was always sun is coming up or already up.
