Fertilized lake

Featured Replies

Today, state fisheries officials dumped 1000 pounds of fertilizer in my main lake which is 300 acres. In the past, when fertilized the lake has turned off bigtime. My question for everyone is,do you have the same kind of fish behavior when your lake/lakes are fertilized, and if you do have success what are you doing to catch 'em?I'm off Thursday and Friday(09-14-06 and 09-15-06) and had hoped to fish both days.Should I stay home or do you know of a way that you use to catch 'em?

I am sorry that I dont have an informative answer to your question, but I think you might as well head out to the lake for at least half the day on Thursday because we all know that even if you're not catching anything,.... its probably better than not being out there at all :)

That's definitely what I would do.

I have found when they do this to my lake that the frog and top water bite turns off 100%.  I will turn to the old t-rigs, c-rigs and crankbaits.

No fertilization here but with all the rain and tons of cow poop washed into it have caused my everyday lake turn into a pea soup. How to catch 'em ? fish it like if was a muddy lake.

i guess i've never heard of this...what's the purpose of dumping fertilizer into a lake?

I dont fish the lake right after it fertilized any more. It gets tough to impossible for a while. If I had to though I would go find fresh water coming in the lake and fish there. I have seen it cause fish kills twice on the lakes I fish. Some of the toughest conditions I have seen were right after a lake was fertilized.

I went anyway. The temps have been in the low 60's all week,so I tried to fish a fall pattern.I fished a feeder creek arm that looked fairly clean.Only got one bit,but it was a 23 inch bass that weighed 6.12 pounds on a Rapala digital scale.I was using a Norman Mad N crankbait(2-5 ft) in chrome w/blue back. The bass was caught in 4-5 ft of water. She really slammed it.Thanks for your advice.

Moving to that creek arm was a smart move. If you have moving water it is less effected.
