How have you learned the most about fishing

Featured Replies

I would have to say from other ppl, fathers, cousins, friends. I mean you have to learn from somewhere. "Teach a man to fish...."   Then refinement of the skill by pratice on the water and trial and error.

I would have to say that alot of the basics I learned were through magazines and books. But there is no substitute for time on the water. :-?

I have been fishing for over half a century ( :o) and can remember the first Bass Master Magazine I ever saw.  But when I got a chance to start fishing with a consistent group of guys (my local club) is really when things began to pop for me.  Now I spend about 1/3 of my time with somebody from this group and the other 2/3 is spent practicing what I learned from them.  Along the way, I have learned how to learn and this has allowed me to pass on some of that knowlege as well.

FOR THE MOST PART...ON THE WATER...BUT WHEN I GET BEAT OUT BY SOMEONE...WHO IS WILLING TO SHARE THEIR SECRETS....I ASK THEM WHAT/HOW THEY DID SOMETHING....WHERE/HOW DEEP THEY WERE ON THE WATER.   JUST GOT BETTER WITH PRACTICE.

Water/books/internet/people.

In that order I think

I have learned the most from this site, but I do the REAL learning once I get to the water and apply the things that I have read.

I don't consider anything learned until I get on the water and catch fish with the particular technique etc.

I have gotten excellent information from other people, like my father, this website and the internet in general, as well as magazines and tv shows. However, upon receiving that info I only consider myself having an idea of how it's supposed to be done.

I had a hard time answering this question. In terms of facts, I know literally hundreds of bits of info. from reading books, but haven't really applied them successfully on the water yet. But in terms of actually fishing, I have learned more on the water. I answered Books because I have learned more information from them but have learned more techniques by fishing.

I have to say the internet. As a 13 yr old, I have a lot of time on my hands. But, do to my dads tight schedule, I don't get much time on the water.

Family and friends,  which took me out on the water.   :)

I would have to say time on the water because experiance is the best teacher. I get several magazines, watch In-Fisherman and talked to other anglers but until you get on the water it all means nothing.

Initially, the guy that "taught" me how to fish told me very little.  I found it to be a challenge and enjoyed it.  Once he saw I was serious it then became a combination of learning from others, watching TV, reading, and practice.  Now, I learn on the water by trying new things out I read or find out here.

For me its on the water and other people. Like my casting, hookset etc is on the water. But like spots where fish spawn, or a good place to fish, or what bait to use in a certain time and area is from other people.
