Fly fishing for bass

Featured Replies

I was just wondering if any of you guys have fly fished for bass..  :o and if so what flies have you had sucsess with?

I have used wooly buggers, wooly worms, Clouser minnows, Clouser crayfish and popping bugs  for bass fishing.  Lots of fun on a fly rod.

I've always used surface poppers but this year I purchased a variety of bass-sized flies: deer hair bugs, swimming flies, diving flies etc.  Can't wait to try them out.

I have guided with a fly rod for LGMouth Bass for 15 plus years now. It truly is my favorite style of fishing.

CApt mike what do you use?? what seems to work the best for you? is there certain line to use. If one were to use wooly buggers would you use sinking line with that or just weight the wolly bugger a bit heavier??

Do you use sinking line with your  Clouser minnows, Clouser crayfish, wooly buggers?

There is an article in In Fisherman that goes over different type of lures while fly fiching for bass. I can't recall what month it was, when I get home i will see if I still have it and repost.

I do not know squat about fly fishing but thinking of picking up a rod sometime soon to teach myself.  Is there a specific situation where you would use a fly rod over a spinning rod?   Are fly rods mainly for finesse techniques and when the bite is slow?

Fly fishing isn't  really used for certain techniques that i know of :-? Its just a different way to fish mainly fly fishing its more percise casting and your not casting lures your casting the line.. and the fight seems a lot harder!!! i just start fly fishin about a year ago and its a lot of fun!! I still gear fish all the time but i would never pass up a chance to pick a fly rod up any day!!! its def worth a try!!! but casting takes some practice thats for sure!!!

Doucet,

I rarely use sinking line or weights. Perhaps when fishing deep water such as lakes but that's about it. There is a fly dressing that helps your flies sink faster, usually found at any fly shop. You can also just spit on them. The specific gravity of saliva is greater than water and your fly will sink quicker. There are tons of fly fishing books available as well as much info on the net. I would encourage you to join a fly fishing forum and ask questions specific to the area and water that you intend to fish. Without knowing much about your situation it is hard to make recommendations.

Good luck and have fun.
