Catching spawning fish is the easiest thing to do, just fish slowly so your bait either sits or runs closely to the nest, the fish will strike it.

I like to use a craw tube and pitch it on the beds, you just have to set the hook a little harder because there is a lot of plastic in the way of the hook

I would live them alone. Let them make "babies" ;)

Maybe try catching the prespawn or potspawn bass in slightly deeper water.

If you realy have to catch bedding fish, you could try a T-rigged lizard, tube, crawfish imitation(jig, tube, plastic craw), or even a worm. You want to pick a colour that you can see well.

Try to find the "sweet spot" in the nest. You might have to cast quite a few times.

If they go off the nest while you approach, back off. Wait a couple minutes(5-10), and cast from greater distance.

If you have a "bite" se the hook immediately, because most of the times bass just picks up the bait and spitts it out of the nest.

Good luck.

I give you some contrary advice. Don't fish for the bedding bass. Back off to the first good drop into deep water from the spawning area. Fish cranks deep enough to go down the break, or spinnerbaits, or just about any plastics or jigs. Not all the bass in the lake are spawning at the exact same time. The pre-spawn and post-spawn fish will be out there deeper, and most will be easier to catch.

Cheers,

GK

well i would use a wacky rigged finess worm, a shakey head in the bed, or a jig. All of these will catch those fish just throw it in there and shake it and look for white. Ounce you see white set the hook. The white is the inside if that fishes mouth as it sucks you bait in. I have a blast with this on the Hot Side of lake anna, catching 50-70 bass a day.

Good luck

Don't let the don't fish for bedding bass guys get you down. Lets face it, if you go fishing for bass in the months of February through May, then YOU ARE FISHING FOR SPAWNERS. The spawning activity consumes their entire life during that period. If a fish is eating during those months, it is doing so to support itself for the spawning cycle. Pre spawn is for gaining the energy it will take to go through the ordeal, spawn is the actual bedding phase, and post spawn is where the bass tries to regain it's energy after the dropping of four pounds worth of eggs or fighting off enemy Blue Gill, round the clock for several weeks. Therefore it is all part of spawning process! So for those who say you should not fish for spawning bass, I say you shouldn't be fishing for bass February through May PERIOD.

(I just read some of this info at Keith Nighswonger's site, and though to myself... it is so true, whether you want to believe it or not)

Tube Baits, 3" Senkos, and 4" hand poured worms are my best bedding fish lures. Key is to keep working the lure in the bed for as long as you can.

I love sight fishing!  ;) I have more fun catching a small bed fish than a good sized prespawner. I'll throw something big into the bed to make them mad, then follow with a smaller bait when they are hitting anything that moves.

I'm gonna be catchin spawnin bass all day long. I don't what you were talkin about. I'm throwin 'em right back, and I don't catch em, somebody else will.

Kinda like shootin fish in a barrel, Dont see much sport in it .

LET THEM SPAWN

Not much difference in hunting deer during the rut...or should you let them breed???????

GO HUG A TREE, much easier than huggin a bass :P ::)

With this logic, You shouldnt fish for pre-spawners either.....because it is disturbing them from breeding, PLUS If you fish enough you will notice that the fish that we want to pass on DNA are spawning in 8-10 foot of water, so you shouldnt bother them fishing for pre-spawn fish....

NOone has asked whether or not they should fish for spawners... ::)

Unless I am sightfishing,I like a T-rig senko, brush hog, Jig, spinnerbait...try it all.. let the fish tell you ....

NOone said anything about disturbing them could care less  I said IMO I dont see the sport in it .Bass fishing to me has always been the art of catching something you can't see but know is there, and tricking them by making something that isn't real seem real.I have know problem with guys who sight fish or who fish for spawner to each his own. Just not for me.Sorry if i came off wrong

No problem with you Turtle know what you are saying.SOme others bash people when they ask how to bedfish, not should they ::) Fishing prespawn fish isnt a logical arguement,IMHO....Because I have caught my biggest bedders doing just that. Fishing staging areas. That is in fact where the pigs are.

No sport????? ::) Ever try to catch a fish on an artificial lure in clear water? It aint easy especially if they aint hungry.  :'( I tournament fish and if that is how you have to catch your biggest fish you got to do it, cause the competition is doing it to if it is working.

If you can see they fish, They can see you :-[....Its a fact. 98% of the time, You wont get the to bite.

To me sightfishing is one of the toughest scenarios there is. It aint as easy as it sounds.....They must use bows and spears in your neck of the woods when they go on bed ;D
