Match the hatch-or-whatever falls from the tress

Featured Replies

For a couple of weeks, about a month ago, I was in a massive drought on our pond. I was throwing everything in the tackle bag at them. Changing colors, size and presentations of my lures. I spent a lot of time with top water lures as I heard them all over the pond hitting the top especially around brush and near the banks. Knew for sure they were hitting the new spring bugs.

Late one afternoon as I was casting off a little point, out of the corner of my eye I saw something moving in the water behind me. I look and it's a big ol' fat caterpillar that fell in the water. I was thinking how this year was the worst I had seen them. They were everywhere on the house and roads - couldn't walk around without stepping on one, or, if near/under trees having one fall on you. DOH!

Got my lite spinning rod and attached a 3/0 EWG hook. Then took a 4 green Senko and cut it in half. I wacky rigged the cut in half senko and cast it out along the bank to my left at the edge of some overhanging tree limbs. I let it sit for a 10 count. Then twitch, twitch again, then BAM! First cast pulled in a 2 lbr. Few more casts and I pull in another one; 15 minutes later a third. In a span of about 30 minutes I caught more than the last two weeks.

I felt foolish. Overlooked the basics. Thought I knew what was going on, but never really took the time to investigate and be sure. The answer was right there in front (and behind) of me but I was too busy trying to find the right color, size, pattern, etc. If I would have just spent a few minutes REALLY observing what was going on, instead of digging through the tackle box looking for the watermelon red-flecked skirt instead of the gold flecked one, would have made a big difference in the length and severity of my drought.

Livin in the moment, Good job.

The other Mook in a boat Ron has a habit of treeing plastics when fishing the shallows. He tugs em and they fall right in then turns as if he meant to do that all along and mutters"SQUIRELL PRESENTATION"  cracks me up every time

That reminds me of a time I was fishing with my kids at a friend's pond.  We were having no luck and then I remembered that he feeds them pelletized food every day.  I found some brownish grubs and pinched off enough of the tail to make it resemble the food pellets.  I placed this "pellet" on a hook under a bobber and the kids started slaying them!  Match the "hatch"  baby!

Bass always tells you what they want; we just have to listen  ;)

That's why God gave us 2 ears & only 1 mouth. So we can listen twice as much as we talk.  :)

Muddy - squirrel presentation - didn't know that's what it was called.  Been doing that one myself.  Actually, is one of my better presentations.  Especially with the fly-rod.

You crack me up, dude.

Way to go!!

Keeping a sharp eye and picking up on the signals is a sure way to nail.

well done.
