Lily pad question?

Featured Replies

I fish this lake on the way home that is filled with lily pads.  I know there are fish there but I can't get them to bite.  I tried frogs, buzzbaits, and spinnerbaits.  I can't get even a hit.  Any suggestions would be great.  I am stuck on the bank but it is a pretty small lake only about 100 acres.

Thanks

I posted a early question and here is what I've learned and what has worked for me.....I throw a heavy jig or t rig lizzard 3\4 oz weight around the edges. Then I throw them right on top and work it in to the open holes.....be ready when they hit because they will come through the lilly pads and scare the living sh_t out of you so be ready ....you need to use braid because it's easy to break off......this has become really fun just watching them come through the pads.

How dense are the pads? If they aren't too thick try to wacky rig either a YUM Dinger or a finesse worm (Culprit or ZOOM of your choice) and cast or pitch to pockets in between pads, let it sink a little and watch your line, if you see any movements, set the hook, if not let it sink to the bottom and then gently pop it a few times and let it sink again.

If nothing then reel up and recast to another pocket. If this doesn't work try either a popper or chugger. From the sound of it they don't hit fast moving lures in the weeds, this is because the pads are restricting their movement. Try a slower lure.

My reccomendation would either be a t-rigged worm, wacky worm or other slow presentations. If you aren't familiar with working plastics then helicopter a spinner-bait or try a jig. Experiment and see what gets them to strike!

If they won't hit one lure they may hit another, and also try different presentations and colors.

good luck!  8-)

I love fishing lily's and thick weeds. Ive caught some of my biggest catches throwing blind. I throw senko's and fat ikas, t-rigged. No weight. Just jerk them through the pads and into the open areas. If you have them rigged right, they should be snag-proof untill you set your hook.

I have a pond I fish like this I do it 3 ways

1.Fish any hole or"alley" you can find with a floating worm ZOOM TRICKS work for me here TRIGGED

2. A 1/2 ounce sized bullet wieght pegged T RIGGED into a 7inch *** Ripple Tail

3. If top 2 don't work i go fish where there arent any lily pads

There's a small pond similar to yours close to me and I've only caught fish on Zoom Finesse worms and small spinnerbaits.

I fish the Finesse worms weightless and weedless. Cast ity onto the pads and when you get it to an edge by open water let it fall. They'll probably hit it on the way down. If not, work it as close to the pads as you can. Vary your retrieve till you find the speed and movement they want. Try letting it rest on the bottom before jerking it or try fishing it suspended. Work the whole water column.

With the spinnerbaits try downsizing to the smallest one you can find. They make less of a disturbance when they land which might be just what those fish are looking for rather than the huge splash of a regular sized one.

Oh, and don't forget to be sneaky...

Johnson's Silver Minnow in gold color ½ oz, Uncle Josh's #11 Original Pork Frog in Green Spots. After making you cast start reeling with a slow to moderate retrieve keeping you rod tip high. The idea is to keep the bait moving just under the surface so when it reaches pads it will walk over then.

Once you get a strike hesitate until you feel the bass then set hook  ;)
