Sit him down in a chair in front of the computer, and let him read all of the Fishing Articles on here.. There's so much you can learn just from reading what's on here about fishing in General.

Then, nothing lets you learn how to fish better then just getting out on the water.

Reading first, then taking the knowledge of what you've learned online, to the water, is a great way to truly understand what you're doing..

Hope that helps a bit..

Well, is he already interested or are you trying to get him into it?  If you're trying to get him interested it might be harder.  One thing to do is to take him to a place where you KNOW you will catch fish (and lots of them).  I know that worked for me.  A buddy started me off with a rooster tail in a little pond where we were catching bluegill, crappie, bass like every other cast.  That got me hooked!!!

If he already has the interest and you want to teach him the ropes, I'd start him off with a t-rig worm or a senko.

Another thing is pretend like your a professional guide.  Let him hit the best spots first.  You'll want to spend as much (or more) time watching him and helping as you do fishing yourself.  At least until he seems to have the hang of it.  There's nothing more frustrating for a beginner than watching the other guy catch fish while he's just hauling water.

I hope he gets bit by the bug...and BAD!  There's nothing like fishing with your dad!!!

If he is already sold on fishing get him prepared before he goes.

Show him how to cast with a cheap rod and heavy line in a yard.  Tell him how to keep the reel from tangling.  Then make him practice a basic knot.

The rest can be done at the lake.

Take him fishing (to your most productive fishing holes)!  The best place to learn is on the water, especially when the bite is on!  Teach him the basics first and give him follow-up material to reinforce the basics.  Good luck!  :)

he isn't realy into it as far as i can tell.

I think he is on the line between kinda like and like.

we fish at casitas lake  from shore and it is har to get a bite.

we are moving to texas only 15 minutes fro ray roberts lake.

my frien and i are addicted to fishing. and so is my friends dad.

i think i should get us all together and try too make it easy and simple for hin to understand what we teaching him.

is this a good Idea

This is kind of a funny switch, the kid teaching the dad to fish.

but here's what I learned about teaching my kids to fish.

You are there for him.

Even though you will fish, your primary job is to teach him.

Position the boat to his advantage, watch how he casts.  combine 75% praise and ecouragement witn 25% constructive criticism.

Make it fun.

It's always best to get the fundamentals down before going on the water.  Namely basic casting technique.

No fun being in the boat and constantly untangling line from the rod rip.

Then make sure you get into lots of fish.  Now we all know there can be no guarantees about this, but if you go out with a few dozen nightcrawlers, some senko's and a small popper, it should provide for alot of fun action with the bream and small bass.

Remember YOU are there for HIM.

Ahhh ray roberts lake....bring minnows.  ;)

I used to fish that lake when i was younger and lived in TX before moving up here 4 years ago....minnows are the best bait to bring if you opt for live bait for your dad.Not sure sure how you can teach him,but if he's there just to enjoy being with you guys you really can't go wrong with minnows and a bobber on that lake. What i did was put a small split shot 3-6 inches up from the hook rigged a live minnow, cast and retrieve slowly and just caught close to every specie in that lake that eats minnows.

i went through teachin my dad to fish too. it all started when my mom took me to a bluegill lake and i saw a huge bass just come in and take a bluegill and then leave. then i was on a quest for bass. so i finally got my dad to take me bass fishing. he'd never been bassfishing and he'd only caught two bass in his life...both by accident. well i taught him knots, tackle selection, what to use and when to use it and all the stuff that he needed. it was a coldfront kinda day, so i figured ok...its coudy, cold, i think ill fish slow. i put on a t-rig worm and within 10 minutes of fishing i caught my first bass ever!!! i caught about five more and my dad still had none but was gettin lots of hits. we were fishing the same worm too. so i looked at his and noticed that the hook point in his was burried in the plastic. so i pushed it all the way through so it was texposed. then couple minutes after that he had a 4lber on!!!! ever since then he always uses worms...and i try to get him to use stuff other than worms....sometimes he does..but he usually uses worms. but i taught him well enough to where he can fish on his own now and ask me for anything if he needs to.

bubbler you said he isnt realy into it, Dont try to force it take him out and go fishing.Explain why your doing somthing and show him how to do the same, let him know why you casted to a spacific spot and not to another.Let him use your favorite lure, show him how you use it and let him learn. We all learn by our mistakes let him make them and encourage him as you go.he will learn in his own time.Have fun with it and good luck.I taught my wife 3 kids and my best friend this way and they are all verry good anglers. :)
