Bass or something else?

Featured Replies

I have been fishing at this new pond i found and everytime that I go out there, no matter what time of day, there always seems to be fish chasing baitfish and hitting the top of the water.  I cannot determine whether or not these are bass.  I have caught several small bass out of the pond but what ever is hitting the top of the water and chasing the baitfish is definently bigger than anything that I have caught.  I would try casting to where they are doing this but it is never within reach of a cast or its on the one side of the pond that i can not get to.  I have thought that it might be gar but i have never even seen a gar in there.

Any idea what this might be?

Thanks,

T-Bone

This could most definetly be bass! Either that or larger panfish... You just might want to try to imitate the baitfish, and if their hitting the top of the water then you might want to try either topwater or something like a bait fish colored baby 1-...  ;)

Also try throwing a fluke into these boils.

You read my mind,lol.

If the fish you are seeing chase the bait is bigger than what you are catching, I would say there is a very high chance that it is a bass.  Either that or you have some Kivers on steroids. :)

My suggestion would be to use some live bait. Best bet is to catch some of those baitfish and use them.

This will really tell you what kind of fish they are.

It's possible they are bass, but it's also very possible that it is catfish. It surprises a lot of people, but catfish do act like bass at times and often feed in the shallows.

Yup I would echo trying to throw a fluke in there....

This weekend with Rebbasser we saw boils chasing something right near the boat working back and forth over about 50 yards.  I asked if these were bass and Reb said "HECK YEAH!".....I figured they must be chasing baitfish.  I tied on a fluke and made a couple of casts in the way I thought the "schools" were going.  Sure enough one slammed my fluke (first fluke use) and I landed it.

I figured what the heck...not my usual type of fishing but I have a pack in my arsenal just in case!

a lot of times the "jumping fish" is not what you think.......but sometimes it is.........hopefully bass

i would say though, a better chance being a larger panfish....iv seen them just up to 3 feet in the air

or maybe a carps tail is hitting the top of the water while its feeding, creating an illusion of a jumping fish

i pray for you that it is bass!
