Baby Fish??

Featured Replies

So me and a buddy went out to a small, 1/2 acre pond.  gets around maybe 15-20 feet deep  I know for sure this pond has LM, catfish, and bluegill, maybe another type of sunfish.

While beating the bank, I noticed tons and tons of tiny fish.  Most of them were a light color, but also some were darker, maybe 3/4 in long.  I know what tadpoles look like, and they were not them.

My question is, what type of fish are laying eggs this time of year.  do catfish start spawning this cold???  Just curious.  Thanks

Im in Maryland and i tell ya what i have been playing on ice on a stream that goes to a farm pond and broke through on purpose water wasnt deep,,,, and low and behold when the water would wash over the chunks of ice i saw a lot of small fry catfish about a inch long tryin to go back in the water from off the ice :o

Actually believe it or not the crappy spawn earlier than bass. What you may be seeing is fry crappie. They can be white or black crappie.

In my area, the crappy spawn in Feburary and March, while the bass spawn in April, May.

They may be crappie, after all most pond owners do stock their ponds with crappie.  8-)

They could be bluegill too. Bluegill spawn many, many times a year. I imagine they might spawn once in a blue moon in winter in the warm waters of california.

Given the fact that you saw so many of them like that I think they are mosquito fish.
