Using pulled stumps as placed cover...chime in...

Featured Replies

Hey all..

I know we have talked about creating different cover in our local ponds, the rules, laws, etc. but I wanted to run an idea by everyone. What do you think about using pulled stumps as cover? I've heard X-mas trees, man made cover, (pallets etc.), rocks and more. But I was thinking, a pulled stump gives the bass and forage fish pretty much all they need, no?

What do you guys think?

I realize that size would have to be limited due to the weight, but I'd like to hear ideas.

Thanks in advance,

bassnajr

Sounds good. If you cut some of the roots back to help keep from hanging up. I wonder how much weight it will take to sink one? Plus always take into consideration if your water has alot of current. Most of the brushpiles on my lake get swept away by current when the TVA decides to run alot of water.

Pulled stumps are some of the best bass cover I have fished. It holds fish very well. It's also some of the worst cover I have fished. I have lost more lures in those piles of stumps than any other type of fish attractor.

Just make sure it's not going to float off and pose a hazard for boaters. Here on Wilson, we have enough random floating wood without any extra help. Good luck!  ;)

I say go for it as long as your laws allow it. Anything on a bare bottom will hold fish. Find a decent point and sink it deep enough so nobody else can see it. Some of the best cover in any lake is man made. It's like you're building them a house.

It's illegal in RI Alan.  Dang squirrel cops. >:(

they make excellent habitat but securing them is near impossible.

He won't rat you out, as long as you give him the GPS co-ordinates.
