didn't he catch that fish foul-hooked, that's why it didn't count as a new record?

yup.

that bass was 25.1lbs and i forget the dimensions on it. he snagged it below the dorsal fin on a white jig while sight fishing for it.

i couldnt imagine pulling one of those out of the water. that thing is SCARY BIG!!!

and some might not know this, but that isnt even mac weakly in the photo. mac caught the fish but had his buddy who was a pro guide or something hold the fish, because mac's friend had more fish handling experience and mac was afraid of dropping the fish. i always found that interesting.

Yea I remember a lot of the issues surronding the catch including he was chasing the record.  He must have known it wouldn't count.

I had heard that he still might get it?  I love that guys face in the picture!  Classic

Happy Releasing,

H.G.

The IGFA a already rejected his application for the record or he withdrew the application but either way it will never be recognized as a world record for 2 reasons

1. it was never properly measured and weighed

2. it was not legally caught

But it is huge:  he can bearly hold it up and the bass' belly is straining to not pop out of its skin

25 pounder, foul hooked, all that stuff

No that is not Mac in the picture, its his long time fishing buddy "Buddha" from the triumverate of compadres that included Jed Dickerson, Mac Weakley, and Buddha (I only remember his nickname).  They have been pursuing the record on Lake Dixon for some time now and the Mac-Buddha team landed an 18+ pounder a while back to catapult them into the big bass world.  They saw another MONSTER bass, but thought it might be a lil' smaller than the one they had already caught, so, after Jed begged them for a chance, they let him go after it.  Dickerson landed the fish and it ended up being 20+ lbs., his grand entrance into the big bass world, "*****-slapping Mike Long in his own backyard" some say.  The three have been goin at it for a long time after they heard of the money that would follow the record and have landed a lot of big bass in the process, this infamous bass with the black spot being one of them (fabled to have been caught several times (by Mike Long, then Jed, then Mac)).

If you like the story of the world record I suggest checking out the book Sowbelly:  The Obsessive Quest for the World Record Largemouth Bass

:o

Great googly-moogly.

Anybody know where I can find a bigger, better version of this photo?

google it bud

Found it.

The guy's last name is spelled "Weakley" not "Weakly"

Is that not how I spelled it??? I've read a book that features him about 5 times... I remember the name

No, you spelled it correctly.

It was my fault, I was lookin at the first post and somebody had spelled it without the 'e' so that's what I googled first. No big deal.
