I love catching both, however, if given the choice, smallmouth would win hands down.

I get jealous of you boys down south with your double digit largemouth but it makes me feel better when I remember I've got 5 pound smallies just down the road.  

A lot of times I won't be targeting either in particular.  You definately don't have to see a smallmouth to know you have one on the end of your line.

Panfish.

Nothing like catching a 13/14+ " fish on UL gear with UL reels.

You got that right. One of my favorite fish to go for is the good old bluegill and right now, Kentucky lake, which I live about 15 minutes from, seems to be growing some bulls.

I like catching smallmouth more than largemouth, but largemouth are more abundant, so I'd say its a toss up for me.

According to my Crappie magazine, it said there was more panfish/crappie caught and released than LM last year. This was a general poll, and there were 3,000 more panfish/crappie released according to those polled. And there's an article on how panfishing is becoming the "hottest" or "next" thing to do.

Caught a nice slab 14"er this morning on my Falcon "L" which is like a stronger UL. There ratings are a little harder. With my Plfueger size 20 reel.. and man, the way the line ran and the rod bounced was amazing. I couldn't think of anything better.

Wish they were like tarpon - once they're hooked they try extremely hard to get off. That'd be the ultimate fish.

In fact I'm selling all my heavier gear for ML (bass) or UL/L (panfish). I do like 70/30 (panfish/bass). So I only need one bass rod and two panfish rods. I kayak fish, so 3 rods is considered "a lot", as room is extremely limited.

My lake has both LM and SM in it, and both are there in moderate numbers but tend to run on the larger side than other area lakes. It's not about what I like catching more, it's what I like doing more, and what I will have a higher success rate at. I have many days when I catch alot of both, and many days when I target one or the other. Most of the time weather/seasons decide that for me, like today, both fish are shallow right now, but the wind was blowing 30 MPH out on the lake and all my SM areas were rough, no need to fight that if I don't have to, and have other options, so I went into a protected cove and caught LM all day. But if you had to nail me to pick one.........I would take SM, they run bigger in my lake than the LM, and are just plain fun to catch.

LM. Lived in California and now Texas so have never fished for SM.
