Winter Pond Fishing

Featured Replies

I'm going to be fishing a pond tomorrow. I've never fished a pond during the winter. This pond isn't super deep, maybe 15-20 feet at the deepest spot. There isn't a whole lot of cover or structure in the pond. The shoreline has a lot of brush in the water. However, the places with brush are only about five feet deep. There's also a weed bed in about five to ten feet of water. I was just hoping somebody could give me a few pointers on fishing this pond. How deep should I be fishing? I'm planning on fishing mostly Shaky head worms, texas rigs and jigs. Are there any lures you guys would recommend for this pond? Should I be fishing around brush, weed, or just in deeper water altogether? I apreciate any advise anyone can give me.

I would focus on the deeper water first, then the weedbed. If you have any jerkbaits I would start off with them. I had my best cold weather outing at a farm pond fishing a Lucky Craft Pointer in Chartreuse Shad. If you don't have any jerkbaits, then definitely work those jigs and soft plastics around the weedbed. As always, you'll just need to experiment until you find something that works. Keep changing things up and let the fish tell you what they want.

First, where are you located? Can't be too far north -with a pond not frozen.

I wouldn't necessarily pass up shallow water with cover.

-hard jerkbait

-jig-n-pork or creature

-chatterbait slow-rolled

-SB slow rolled

Sorry for not saying where I live. I live in Oregon. We've also been having warm weather lately, like 40-50F. This pond has always been really warm for some reason, but I don't know what the water temps gonna be like since I haven't fished it since late summer.

Don't worry about the temp. It's not frozen anyway!

If it's small fish it all. If you need to narrow down some real estate, try near good shallow cover, and on sharper drop-offs into the deeper water. You may find fish at the shallower (upper) lip of the drop, so don't only fish the basin.

I like using a Carolina rig alot in the winter. Reel it in extra slow.  It's hard to detect bites some times but I find it effective.   I like to take a senko and rig wacky style and cover alot of area.   Both have worked for me before.   One time I took a Shad colored rattle trap and burnt them up  it was cold out and it was like I was fishing in the summer. I have never had a day since where I caught as many while it was winter
