Fishing with a Plastic Crawdad?

Featured Replies

Just wondering what kind of rig and technique you use when fishing with a crawdad. I've been using a worm hook for these, which seems just fine. I hook it with the claws facing down with no weight added. Any help with these? What's the appropriate time and place to use one of these as well? I'll post a picture of what it looks like, its really similar except the feelers on the head are a little bit longer. Everything else is the exact same about it.

Ah, I would have never even thought to wacky rig this.  Thanks for the suggestion.  I guess this means I can use my Mustad Demon Circle hooks on these.  I love using them anyways because the hook-up is amazing.

Just like with any soft plastic lure you can rig it many different ways. Just go down the list.

Texas Rig w/ slip weight

Texas Rig w/ pegged weight

Carolina Rig

Dropshot

Splitshot Rig

Mojo Rig

Shaky Head

Standup head

Jig chunk

Spinnerbait trailer

The list is as long as your imagination

I've had success using them as jig trailers.

Good to know, thanks for the help.

Even as long as what they are? I just yesterday bought some Stike King 1/4oz Bitsy bugs because I figured I needed to practice my jig fishing more. I actually took the crawdad and cut the tail off of it and kept it for a plastic trailer -- I guess this will work?

I do that too. I cut the first two sections off of rage craws and use the on jigs. You can even use the whole thing, just not on a bitzy bug ha ha

a lot of folks seem to find the keel weighted hook productive, but as for me, i can't be faded with a t rigged craw worm 8-)

Texas rig + jig trailer mainly for me. Thanks for that tip on the wacky rig BASSclary, I'll definitely have to try that the next time out myself :).

Full or in part, that 's entirely up to you and up to fit your needs, it depends on what you want to show to the fish, how fast you want it to fall, how big a profile. So don 't be surprised, I even use whole brush hogs as jig trailers.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I was fishing it on a Bitsy bug last night with the tail cut off of the crawdad. I was fishing it for a good solid 2 hours, just with no action or strikes at all. I must be doing something wrong. I was just letting it drop to the bottom and letting it sit for about 10-20seconds and moving it until I recast it. The place I fish is covered in so much moss that when I go to move the jig from the bottom, I usually feel a snag. However, the weed guard does seem to cut down on this. I feel my flipping/pitching techniques are poor, so that probably doesn't help much either.
