Let's talk swim jigs, both the technique and the tackle....

Featured Replies

Hello everyone;

I have decided that this years technique for me to learn is going to be swimming a jig.  Not just on docks, but through the thick stuff, especially post spawn flooded shrubs!

-  When swimming a jig you can do alot, do you prefer to "swim" or "stroke" the jig, or do you just kinda reel it back in?

-  How important is color when swimming a jig?

-  What trailers do you find to be the most productive?

-  When will bass prefer to chase a jig rather than have it fall infront of them (pitched/flipped)?

-  Who makes the best swim jig? and what characteristics to you like to look for in a good swim jig?

-  I know if can change, but what is a pretty universal weight for swimming a jig? (1/4, 3/8, 1/2 oz)

last question, i promise.....

-  What would be your ideal conditions for swimming a jig....(be detailed!!)

Thanks guys, hopefully these answers will get me headed in the right direction and I can figure the rest out on the water!

Take care, and tight lines!

i usually just reel steady, but if im fishing grass i will pop it if it gets burried in it. i like to use zoom super chunks for a more fluid motion, rage and paca chunks if the fish are fairly active. for a swimming jig, i think 3/8 is about the heaviest i will go, but 1/4 oz is what i use most of the time. darker colors like pumpkin and watermelon are good for stained water, blk n blue for murkier conditions. most of the time i like just solid black, just personal preferance. white is good for clear water and if bass are keeing in on shad. i usually use it as a sub for spinnerbaits. its a more subtle presentation. my favorite time to fish em is if fish are cruisin, but not takin faster baits like cranks and spinners.i like prespawn and fall, or when they are activley feeding on flats in summer. there are plently of ways to fish em, jigs are one of the most versitle baits known to man if you know how to use em. :)

Very nice article.  Thanks for the link.

Later, :)
