construction work create structure for smallies in creeks

Recommended Posts

the creek i fish alot is having new age riprap put in as a flood control in a near by town. there construction on it is to be continued the entire way up to next december. i know the foreman of the job and im sure he will allow me to fish where they are working, but i was wondering how the fish would react to the construction? there are bunch of large bulldozers and cranes in the water along with large levees to steer the creek that creats large pools of dead water. the creek has alot of current and the smallies usally dont migrate i was just wondering if it would be worth wild to fish it next summer

They just put in a new bridge over the crick I fish. They are done now and they dumped a whole bunch of boulders in about 4 foot of water. Along with that, they made it deeper. One of my buddies says the fish have already move back in. They finished the bridge about a month ago. I think if the equipment is out and they're left alone for a while, it will be worth fishing. Good luck! ;)

If you fish it before construction is done and they are "disturbing" the bottom,.....get down stream and set up shop.  Here, when we are bull raking clams in the bay, the stripers sit about 100 yrds away sifting through all the sediment we stir up.  Lots of food is released when you disturb the bottom like that.

Just saying, don't be discouraged if they are working, just modify your plan to try something new.

2 recent fishing shows come to mind.

The first was a Bill Dance show where he was catching bass left and right on the end of the lake where major shoreline construction was going on. He couldn't buy a bite on the quiet end.

The second was an episode of Ultimate Match fishing where one of the competitors caught a keeper from under a dock AS IT WAS BEING BUILT. He pulled that fish out while hammering, drilling and sawing was going on. :D

(It was 14 degrees on the ride to work today, fishing shows will have to do for now.)

The town I live in just redid a bridge on my home lake. So the fish will have a few months to settle in before I can fish it. There used to be bank of riprap and chunk rock on one side of it about 10 feet wide and stretched into 10-12 feet of water. And would always hold one or two quality keepers. But it is now about 20 feet wide and more debris in the water. So hopefully I wil be able to bang out a limit from there.
