Either through the back or through the tail, like right where the meat is before you actually get to the tail. You don't necessarrily have to use a smaller hook to prevent it from dying quicker I don't believe. they will die at there own rate. Plus if your fishing with minnows, chances are what your going to catch is going to be pretty big or atleast big enough to eat a minnow, so if you use smaller hooks they may have a better chance at getting off. Just in my experience with fishing with minnows

P.S. It's finally in the 80's in Florida too and NOT RAINING!!! lol. :)

I like to hook minnows throug the lips.  Don't hook them through the brain or they will die, but don't hook them on the outer parts of the lips or they will fly off.

Open the mouth then up thru the head.  Depending on where you are fishing you may want to try a trolley rig or a 3 way swivel,  fish higher in the water column go with a bobber.

if i do fish minnows/shiners , ill always hook through the lips. you want to do directly behind the lips , but stay in front of the eyes. make sure you have a SHARP hook and the fish will stay alive and swim around.

ive noticed , whenever i hook them through the tail or back , they dont want to swim around and be lively. with a smaller sharp hook through the lips , they have full motion of their tail.

Ok i found this on a website  of take me fishing information booklet

MINNOWS How you hook live minnows depends upon how you are going to fish them. If you are

fishing a minnow to troll (drag the bait) or repeatedly cast and retrieve it, hook the minnow through

the upper and lower lips with the hook point up so that the minnow will "swim" naturally. You can

use this same method for hooked

minnows fished from a single- or

two-hook rig or from a float and

sinker combination. A better

method for float-and-sinker fishing

is to hook the minnow through

the back, but avoid the spine so

as to not paralyze the baitfish.

This allows more natural baitfish

movement. For fishing a minnow

that you allow to free swim

without a weight or float, hook it through the tail so that it can swim naturally to attract game fish.

When im using minnows I use what ever straigh shank hook i have with me. Doesnt really matter i havnt lost a fish due to hook troubles, and i put it under the spin right in front of the dorsal fin. Just have a centimeter under the skin. And i put them on a bobber throw em out, and wait. Nothing fancy, and ive had times where i threw it out walked away came back about 5 mins later bobber gone reeled it in and would have a 3 and a half pound bass on it.
