How deep should I be looking for the Smallmouth bass in Erie this time of summer?  I usually fish the central basin>  Has anybody been fishing for them lately?

Bug, I'm also lookin. I'm heading up to Erie,Pa. in the morning. We caught alot of nice smallies in mid  june in Presque Isle bay average 100 per day. I really never tried this time of year up there. I'm hoping for some good results.

I would think that 15-20 fow would be pretty good right now. Those fish should be just about over the spawn and holding on breaks, humps, rockpiles in 15-20.

I wouldn't rule out 20-30 fow either.......

Usually we fish the rivers off the lakes this time of year. Detroit River and St Clair River but I would say you should find them in 15 - 20 ft on the lake. We're going to St Clair July 31 for our 2 day on the 2 nd and 3 rd of August. Good luck, Snag

18 inches is a dink? I say that's a nice smallmouth.

If you want to see how its done, tune into the Bassmasters on ESPN and watch the elite pros bring in huge bags of Erie smallmouth out of Buffalo NY. I guide for them on the Canadian side and the NY side in spring. You can target any depth you want to, but the real big bags seem to be coming from depths to 60 feet.

Depending on wind, which is necessary, sometimes spinnerbaits and jerkbaits work well from 2-18 feet of water on rocky points and reefs. Dragging tubes in higher winds works great in 2--40 feet of water and dropshotting gulp bait in 40-60 feet works well when you can have boat control. Good luck.
