Ive caught thousands of smallmouths and only a few have had these crazy cool looking orange eyes. Anyone know why that is?

Normal for around here, some even get the red eyes like a rock bass.

hey i wanted to ask how big does a smallie usually get because i caught a 24' bass i guess it was weighing about 6 lbs. i know for sure it was not a black bass because i have caught plenty of those. this thing was bronze goldish color with black eyes. i just think it was kinda big for a smallie. this is a picture of the head. i have caught some small bass with those crazy looking eyes around here just not that big.. i just want to make sure this is a smallie

That is a Largemouth or "Black Bass". Their coloration varies depending on the depth and color of the water they were in.

i didn't have any stripes on it...and it wasn't as dark... i would show you the pictures of the body but the pictures are too big 230 kb and i cant post them..

You can tell from the mouth that it is a Largemouth. Besides, they're aren't any lagemouth in your part of the state. They generally live in cooler waters than Lagemouth do. It's a nice Largemouth though.

That's not a largemouth but if you make the hike to lake Texoma, Texas they have smallmouth there

Nice fish Jesse, but not a largemouth.  Although I've never heard of any being caught in J Lo's part of the state, both Falcon and Amistad have had stockings of smallies.

That's a largemouth as well. I doubt there are smallmouth in that lake, because from the looks of it it is muddy and shallow which is usually not good habitat for smallmouths. The current world record is 11 pounds and 15 ounces, caught in Tennessee.

OK  i just thought they weren't largemouths because compared to the ones if have caught in amistad you cant see the stripes on them and they are not as black, they have this goldish color to them... oh and those orange eyes too.. some of them not all.... the ones in amistad are darker and you can really see their stripes... i guess it does depend on the water and stuff. this is another most of them look like this in this lake... and there is no record of stocking smallies just largies

Yup, their coloring varies alot. I like the dark colored ones myself, they just look cool. 8-)

most of the smallmouth i catch have the bronze or orange look to their eyes- great looking fish and a pleasure to catch
