Smallmouth Fishing on a small Creek in southern PA?

Featured Replies

Any tips? The water is semi-cloudy, and about 5-6 ft deep. Lined with trees, pretty moderate current. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would bring an ultra lite and a baitcaster, or bigger spinning gear. Rig the UL with a small inline spinner, a jig head and grub, or other small baits. Work that bait till you find them, then throw bigger tackle, such as Yum Craw bug, tubes, spinnerbaits etc. I have found the best way to find fish is to use smaller tackle, then search for the big ones using bigger tackle. I have fished a small river for smallies my whole life, and a jig head and black grub is without a doubt the number 1 producer for all kinds of sizes. Early and late in the day topwater produces some nice strikes. I like to throw a small Rebel Popper and a Sammy 115 for the topwater bite. A little Rebel Crawfish crank will get you a lot of fish also.

Hey thanks! Sounds great... i got all the stuff you mentioned. Heading out this evening. Hope I at least get One - ive never caught or fished for smallmouth before.

Try a pumpkin 4" grub on a 1/8 or 3/16 ball head. (I like the Mr. Twister ones) They work great for smallies in the rivers and streams in NY.

If the current is pretty fast, look for the areas where the fast current meets the motionless water, the smallies are bunching up in these areas right now and hitting slow falling jigs and dragging tubes. Depending on the temp of the water they might hit a jerkbait.

Hey Trevor, where do you live?

You can also throw small streamers, caddis fly, dragon fly nymphs! With a ul rod and split shot. ;) Fly fishing on the cheat! ;) Buy the good ones at a local fly shop. ;)
