New Rod Help

Featured Replies

Hi, I am looking for some recommendations on a rod. I am looking for a rod that:

  • will be good while both wading and fishing from a kayak.

  • very sensitive

  • Will work well with 1/16oz jigs n twister up to 3/8 oz lures

  • And most importantly, it needs to allow those 12-16 inchers to fight well since the water I'm fishing I rarely hook up with HUGE smallies. Since I usually catch 'smaller' fish I want a rod that will make the fight fun

Also, trying to keep it under $100.

In a Kayak, I would go with a 6 1/2' to 7' MLF rod.

St. Croix Premier.

TFO makes a nice one.

Plenty of others to choose from. Try to handle a few of them.

X2 on that St. Croix.  Its my go to rod for most everything.  I wade for river smallies, catch largemouth, and even have caught atlantic blues and spanish mackeral on it.

Very sensitive, but still has quite a backbone

I  have a g loomis rod for sale in the classifieds that would suit what you asking for great. I'm asking 125 shipped and that is  like buying a $100 rod and paying taxes or shipping. Rod originally cost me $165 and I have only used it for 4 trips.

If you're going with light tackle for kayak fishing, you will need a rod long enough to clear the bow, with a bend in the rod.  With heavier tackle, this isn't and issue, as you can simply turn the boat with the fish.  Not so with light tackle.

In that price range I would look at a shimano either clarus or compre right now there is a mail in rebate on both and they have a lifetime warranty.

thanks for the suggestions. I made it to a couple stores and felt a bunch of different rods and I decided to get a St. Croix avid 6'3 mlxf. I found it for 130 on sale at gander and couldn't pass it up. I love the action on it, should be perfect for me.

I love it so much, I have two (one of them caught the fish to left), and the MXF version as well. :)
