How Should I Fish This Lake?

Featured Replies

The lake I fish almost everyday is a fairly small lake located in a neighborhood. To give you an idea of how big it is, I can easily walk around a couple times in a full days fishing. It has a few sort of coves/bays where I think it is shallower and it runs close together in the middle the spreads again making a shallow sort of flat. It has been tough during the prespawn and I can't seem to find any big fish or good amounts of fish. I have caught a few small ones on a rattletrap and a jerkbait but thats it. Any ideas on how I can fish this lake during the prespawn?

What state is it in? Do you see any structure (dam, trees, points on the edges of coves)?

It's hard to say what i would do because i dont know climate/water temps.

I agree, we need more information. Water temp, state, max. depth of the lake, weed & forage type in the lake, water clarity....a lot goes into knowing this stuff before you attack any body of water.

Have you checked with the Fish & Game Dept., to see if there are any big bass in there? If the lake hasn't been managed properly, chances are there may only be stunted bass. Or there could be a couple of real giants! :)

I live in mid Missouri and temps have been hovering in the 60s and 70s for a few days and at times topping out in the 80s. The water has been clear but a storm came through last night dropping a lot of rain and the water is pretty muddy now. If I had to guess I'd say the water gets no deeper than 15-20 feet and the only structure I have seen are rocks in some places and a lot of moss/weeds. The rain also made the water cool down a bit, I'd say its somewhere in the 50s now.

It sounds like you can move fairly freely around this pond and that you are shorebound. What I would try is a white chatterbait jig, with a fluke dressing. Slow roll this bait and fan cast from each position. You can really crawl this along the bottom and it will surely attract and trigger bass. If that doesn't work, slow down some more with a Senko. If you only get small bass on the 5", try a larger size, like the 7". When the water clears back up, spinnerbaits should prove productive.

The most important question you have to answer for yourself is whether or not there are any big bass in the pond. Only you know or can find this out for sure.

fish the points and other things could effect the bass growing like shad or bluegill if the bass don't eat alot they won't be very big, try a crawl like a zoom super speed crawl or a chigger crawl by berkley (use the 4 inch for a texas rig 3 inch for a jig trailer) or even try a crawdad colored shallow crankbait or a orange and black spinnerbait or jig, when the water warms up try to go to a brighter color like green or white and if you don't get many bites go back to the more natural colors
