Will An Mbr844C Imx Work As A Frog Rod?

Featured Replies

I've been looking at getting a frog rod lately, but am a bit short on extra cash right now. I've tried to find one via trade with no luck so far. So, I have a Loomis MBR844C IMX that I rarely use. Would it be OK for a frog rod?

Thanks,

Dave

Should work fine for that. I fish frogs alot but don't have a specific rod set aside for it. I use a St. Croix Avid 7' MHF most of the time... Also have a Dobyns Champion 704C that could see some use for this application.

I know some people like a softer tip for this application.

I LOVE that rod !!! Yes I have two GLX's one always has a jig on it the other usually has a frog. I enjoy it's longer handle when I'm working a hollow body.

I second the previous opinions. That is a very versatile rod. I have used use it for pike & lake trout throwing lures up to 1.5 oz & it does handle them very adequately. I'm sure it will work for toads & frogs.

I have fished frogs with this rod.

The Pluses:

It cast great

Light enough to fish frogs all day without wearing you out

It has the perfect tip action IMO for working the frog

Love this rod for open water or light cover frog fishing

The Minus:

Does not really have the backbone for the real heavy slop. Take a 2lb bass and add 5lbs of weeds and the rod feels like its about to snap as your trying to pull that bass out. Unlike a rod designed for frog fishing, you can't really horse them out of the thick stuff with this rod, you can get them out, but its not like a frog rod with backbone where you can yank them up on top and get them coming toward you in seconds.

Bottom line IMO, if your not fishing the real heavy stuff this rod works great for frogs. If fishing heavy slop, there are much better choices. It can be done, you just won't be able to horse them out like you can with a rod designed for frog fishing.
