Va Smith Moutain Lake Advice

Featured Replies

I'm taking a trip to Smith mountain lake in the middle of June, any advice from people who have fished there? I read on the va game and fish site that the Roanoke river branch is best for Large mouth and the dam for striper. At a guess I'm going to say that the bass will be in 8-18ft of water (am I right?) but I honestly have never fished the lake before. Any special colors that work there?

Thanks, I'm looking forward to your responses.

I stopped there 2 years ago, and while I can't give you specific fishing tips, I can tell you that it's a beautiful lake, and a wonderful place to spend a couple days. It's also a very big lake, and when I was there we had little traffic, and that was middle of the summer.

honestly ive never caught a striper over at the dam. but i have seen them break like crazy there. id try craddock creek for stripers this time of year. chartruese mister twister 4inch swimbaits on trolled on large jig heads work for me this time of year there. for bass, chrome lipless cranks, baby bass, and pearl white colors have worked well for me...

i'd be there this weekend if i didnt have to go to NC tonite, oh well, just gives me a chance to hit up lake gaston and a pond my bro-in-law is gonna take me too

Mid June on Smith Mtn. Fish at night, find the shad and throw topwaters and wake baits parallel to the bank, as close to the bank as you can get. If you want to fish during the day there are about 2 million docks you can fish with senko's and shakyheads or you can crank deep on main lake points or find some brushpiles and do some worm fishin'.

A good friend of mine, Mike Snead, runs a bait and tackle shop (Virginia Outdoorsman) at the lake. He also has a web site which I use every week for Smith Mountain Lake Fishing updates: He provides fishing reports and can point you to some guide services which I have used. You will love the lake.

I'm pretty familiar with Smith Mountain lake.I'm by no means a great angler but thanks to this website and some friends who fish I'm starting to get a bead on the place.I'm gonna try to PM you some info. But also check out the VA Outdoorsman and 5 bass's info.
