Sand Quarry Bass

Featured Replies

I recently discovered a sand quarry near my house and the water looks excellent.. I live in Western NY so we haven't had many warm days yet. It's been around 45-50 degrees but today was around 60 so I decided to check it out and see if I can pull in some bass. I threw out my tackle box, jigs, lures, top waters and caught nothing. We did pull in some huge perch with worms (couldn't believe the size) and the water is still pretty cold.. My question is: Is it possible that the water is still too cold for the bass to bite? Is there usually other species of fish in Quarries other than Perch?? I haven't seen anything jump, I was there for 3 hours. The water is pretty deep, can be over 20-30 feet deep further out. I fish quarries a lot but I just don't have much knowledge of them. Any comments will be helpful!

Thanks

Perch usually are active earlier than bass and if the water is that deep it's going to take awhile to warm up. Try to stick with the slower presentations and natural colors if the water is clear. A jig, shakeyhead, or hard jerkbait (probably a perch colored one ;) ) would be my baits of choice in your situation.

It's in Clarence NY. I just found the quarry by using google maps. I'm hoping there is bass in there, I'm not too sure on how deep the water is though, it's a pretty good quarry though. After not catching any bass on lures/jigs/spinners we just used worms and nailed perch. Is it possible that some quarries won't have bass?

I would imagine there's bass in there you'll know soon enough with warmer weather

I fish a sand quarry near my house. I have caught several bass this year. One guy already caught a 5lb and 8lb largemouth on crankbaits. Water temp is in the low to mid 50s. I don't know if your quarry has steep drop offs or not but the one I fish does so I fish parallel to the shore and have increased my catch.

Update:

UGHH still no bass at the new quarry I found!! I'm not giving up though. The weather has been 60-65 degrees this week so I decided to give it a shot again today. It's been pretty windy so I don't know if thats affecting the fishing, but, I did not see one bass jump as of yet there. I don't see any live minnows swimming around. The only thing I caught there so far was perch. Should I keep on throwing out the tacke box or give up there?? I just can't believe there is only perch in this big quarry. Is it possible there can only be perch and that's it?? I'm not a rookie when it comes to bass fishing, but trying to figure out a new spot is different to me. This place is very close and nobody is ever there. Any tips??

Keep at it I'm sure there in there one of the quarrys I fish in albion the bass are already spawning and they all have lock jaw but I know there there. Could be the situation there. I usually wait till mid summer to find bass in new spots. Most of the places I go are covered in slop and pads wich for me is my strong area and find bass in new spots easy.

Try to yo yo a lip less crank bait at different depths or a countdown crank or spinner bait or other lures that you can count down to a depth. What your trying to do is find the depth that they are hanging at and zone in on it. Little George, swim bait, blade bait or a spoon would be other options.

Try a drop shot. Also, ask around at some neighbor's homes if they ever fish it and what they've caught. A local bait shop could be a good source of information for you.

And no, it's not too cold for bass - never is, even during ice up periods. You just have to 1) know that there are bass in there and 2) keep trying different techniques.

And if there are bass in there, a night trip with a Jitterbug might get you what you are looking for! :)

Replying to old thread, i still haven't caught any bass there, its a old landfill near shisler road , u need to walk down a path and its to the right.. if there was bass they would be monsters. I caught perch that felt like bass. All the time I real in a spinner I see a lot of perch chase it.. don't think there's bass but I don't know why, the place is huge and water is deep

Found out that this quarry is a dump for waste water..thats probably why no bass are in there. I talked to others and they have only caught perch..weird.. I have jjst been going to the pond off of shisler road or the quarry off of peppermint but I havnt fished there much as I think its private but I see people there alot.
