Looking For Info On Fishing The Juniata River (Pa)

Featured Replies

The Juniata is known for excellent smallie fishing, and I would like to fish it. I would rent a canoe from a local outfitter...

Would greatly appreciate any information.

Thanks.

Fred

Well, I don't know about the canoe part, but the best advise I can give you is to contact Juan at this site... Central PA Fishing

Where at on the Juniata? I personally fish the river either down by Newton Hamilton or from the point to the spillway right below Raystown. There is some good smallmouth fishing here. Using small curly tail jigs in black, red, and crayfish colors works for me, along with rubber hellgramites(live works too) Another bonus to fishing the spillway is the occasional striper, lake trout or muskie washes down from the lake.

i've fished the j since i was 3 years old. up untill about 8 years ago you would have to try not to catch 40 or 50 everytime you go.. now the greatest day i've had in years was 23 fish... The juniata and the susquehanna are shadows of their former selves but are still great rivers. can't beat a dark green or brown tube. black jitterbugs at night.. sometimes you can catch them all day on a small 1/4 purple buzzbait. if you do livebait hellgremites and stone cats(small 3 to 4 inch catfish) work wonders. just use the typical river smallie lures and you'll catch some fish... during late fall and winter there are some stretches of slow deep water that fish will come from miles around to overwinter in if you find one of these magical spots you can catch a ton of 4 or 5 lb smallies
