I was wondering if someone could go over when to use a snap or swivel and what lures they are used with. Thanks

Snap ---> you can use it on cranks, just don 't snap to the split ring.

Snap/swivel combination ---> in-line spinners

Swivel ---> C-rig, weightless C-rig

This may be a dumb question, but why not use a snap w/ a split ring?

I use a 30lb snap on large lures, 20lb for smaller lures.  Only use swivels for Carolina rigs.  Tie direct to hook only for texas rigs.

I use snap swivels with inline spinners.

I never bought into the advice to not use snaps with split rings. I never saw a decrease in action and have seen no evidence of a reduced number of bites.

I've always used snaps to split rings for crankbaits, jerkbaits, and topwaters like LC Sammy. I also use crane swivels about 12'' above weightless flukes on spinning gear to relieve line twist.

Absolutley agree !!

I only use duolock style. Virtually weightless and does not affect lure action, especially topwater. I would tie before ever using a snap/swivel.

You create a double joint ( snap/split ring/eye ) instead of a single joint ( snap/eye or split ring/eye ), when you reel in the bait that double joint makes the bait wobble intermitently instead of continously, the lure doesn 't move "naturally", instead of increasing the action you are decreasing it.

on cranks i'll use a rapala knot, i almost always run a leader which i'll snap to, with frogs i'll use a black duolock w/ a gold swivel 4-12" in front of a frog and that has actually seemed to increase the hits a bit, i will do this occasionally with jerks and swims as well, but i rarely snap directly onto a lure.

i don't see how you could not use a snap to the split ring , it is some times very hard to go directly to the eyelet on alot of crankbaits . i've never had a problem with attaching my snaps to split rings ...

I'm going to have to fish them both ways now to look for differences - snap to split ring, snap to lure.   My belief was that since the bait is free at the split ring, the action is not impacted if you tie to the split ring, snap to the split ring, or snap to a snap to a snap to the split ring.
