Upgrading my hooks.

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I've decided that it's time to upgrade all my hooks on my lures.  The problem I'm running into is that some like my Jitterbugs are attached directly to eye screws.

My question is this:

Do I cut the old hook off and use a small split ring to attach the new hook?  (What size split ring would be good too)

Also, how should I gauge what size hook to use on any given lure?

Please let me know,

Best,

Paul

When I changed mine I found that most were size 2,4 and 6. I would slide the old hook almost off the split ring and attach the new one before fully taking the old one off. It makes it much easier to get the new one on this way.

I open the eye of the screw with pliers and I change the hooks. After that I close the eye with the pliers.

If you have heavy enough dykes (side cutters), cut the eye of the hook and bend that instead. Then install the new hooks with split rings.

Whatever you do, don't unscrew anything. The screw will not have as good of a bite and will be a weak point.
