Do Trolling Motors Lose Power With Age?

Featured Replies

Mine seems to have lost power, and it's not the battery. What can I check? I don't know much about them. It's a Minn Kota, 40 lb. thrust transom model. I think it's about 15 years old.

The brushes are probably worn out.

Thanks. I called a Minn Kota service center and they told me there's nothing I can do to improve the problem. They also said the motors usually last 8-10 years.

IS it possible that over time you may have picked up some fish line or vegetation inside the hub of your prop?

I have to pull my prop about every other trip to clear debris from under it. Sometimes it's line and others it's vegetation.

The permanent magnets will loose strength. Kinda makes you wonder why they are called permanent.

I'm going to buy a new one, a 55 lb transom mount. I tried to order one from Walmart.com, but it won't let me choose between the 36" and 42" shaft. What the hell? And there's no phone # to call anywhere on their website.

Sue them, just don't make it a class action lawsuit! :D

I found a number to call for Walmart.com and spoke to someone. After going back and forth for 10 minutes, she couldn't help me. There's no way to choose between the 36" shaft and 42" shaft. Great website design.

Check on Amazon. Their pricing may be just as good as Wallyworld and I imagine it would qualify for free shipping.

Thanks. I sent you a PM.
