Crankbait Damage (Deformed)

Featured Replies

Just a warning to anyone who doesn't already know....While out fishing,(trying out different cranks) I left one of the clear boxes sit out on the floor for a couple hours in patial sun, but it wasn't a real warm day. The lid was closed but not latched. Some of the baits ended up deforming. Some expanded and split the paint down the spine, some had small bulges in the side, some actually had BB size dimples in the side. What's weird is, only about 20% of the baits were affected. I assume some might just be more sensitive to the sun/heat. Have you guys ever had this happen to your cranks?

Never had that happen. I have them tied on, sitting on the deck all day and nothing like that has happened. The only thing I can think of is that maybe they were jammed too tight in your storage box.

Very Strange!!

I've had the same thing happen. I have a couple of Cordell Spots that laid in a clear box in the sun for several hours and they are swollen like someone pumped air into them. It didn't happen to every bait in the box, not even every one of the same brand or type, just to a few.

The SK Red Eye Shads are bad about that...but they still catch fish even when swollen... ;)

What brand were they ?

Mann's, Daiwa, Mimic and Lucky Craft. Half of them were custom painted. There are a fair number of them in there, but they're not packed tight. Surprisingly, there were a half dozen Strike Kings that were unaffected. I wonder if pasting aluminum foil in the cover, shiny side out would prevent that (if I forget to put it away again!!!).

Never had that problem with Rapalas. I generally leave them out like that as well. I can guarantee mine will swell and bubble now though!

That was really hard to avoid when the amber colored boxes came out a few years back. Turned me on to the best Long A Bomber ever! It sweeled up like a tick, and that bouyant rascal catches the thunder out of bass now. I've even begun boiling the older models just to make them more bouyant. Silk from a sow's ear indeed! :D
