Spinnerbait, fast or slow?

Featured Replies

When you are using spinnerbaits, when do you "burn" them and when do you fish them slower? Is there certain situations you do either one or do you let the fish tell you which one is better?

I like to burn a spinnerbait when it is cloudy and I am fishing shallow grass or laydowns.  I don't usually slow roll a spinnerbait but when I do, I will do it beside docks and other deeper structure.

it can be hard to tell but here's a good general rule to follow

Active fish = burning on top. If you see fish popping the top its hard to be a blade up high.

Neutral and inactive fish= slow roll. This is what I use most the time and is a good safe bet.

I suggest that you experiment and add some crazy action. Also clearer water requires a faster retrieve but the lure is normally just high in the water column not traveling real fast. Just hold the rod tip high. If you have any out balde question feel free to pm me. Good Luck

I usually fish the spinnerbait as slow and as deep as I can while still getting the blades to turn. Burning works in really shallow water or when the fish are very aggressive.

let the fish tell what they want - fast, slow, slow roll, off bottom, over wood, in cover, etc.  :)

depends on the water, and what the fish are doing.  Shallow or very weedy water and I crank it in faster, I try to keep it just below the surface so I can see it the whole way back.  Deeper water, or less weeds, i'll experiment keeping not of what works and keep doing it.  If i'm going fast and get nothing after a while i'll slow it down, if nothing, i'll try medium.  I seem to get the best results with 2 poles, the spinnerbait seems to get the fish moving, and then throwing in a wacky senko, after about a dozen casts with the spinner if I don't get something i'll throw out the senko, and almost always get one on the first few casts.
