Any forum members fish out of Bull Run Marina? I recently got my key and wanted to see if anyone more familiar with the water has any info they would share.

I got my key in the spring, but will finally be using it today after I get outta work. Can let you know how it goes. I have a great map of the RES and I think the fishing out of there and a little south looks like it could be great.

I went kayaking WAY upstream from bull run and ended up finishing at Bull Run. I didnt fish at all but it looked VERY promissing! It didnt look like many people go up there. There are tons of fallen down trees and underwater structure. I'd love to get out there fishing from the kayak. What kind of boat do you have?

I'm actually a kayak fisherman too! I went out there once, but only had about an hour and a half, so I stayed near the launch. Hoping to go out over the long weekend and spend more time scouting.

I did find a HUGE flat downriver of the launch that seems unreachable to normal boats, but perfect for kayaks. I pulled a couple LMB out of some fallen trees, but nothing over 2lbs

Where did you get the map?

At the richmond fishing expo...... it is one of the gmco (i think that is the company name), you can get it online I believe. It is really good and used it mainly in the lower part, but it is great for showing where the channel is.

Yesterday was nothing to write home about ; low numbers and size. The shallow structure looked so good and I stayed way too shallow. Water was 89 to 86.....

Also there were a lot of people around who seemingly did not buy a key.... not sure how they got there.

We should meet up some time. I havent been able to find any kayak fishing buddies.

I just started to fish the occ reservoir this year. It is a tough place to fish, but thats what makes it so great. Most people don't come back after getting skunked a few times. Here is a great hint for the bull run launch. Start fishing right when you launch. The old bridge pilings hold fish. Same with the bridge right there. I had good luck fishing out of the Fountainhead launch last Tuesday. Two 5 Lbers in about 2 hours of fishing. They were both caught deep. Deep diving cranks have been working well for me, but my buddies have been catching them with soft plastics in the same areas. One bad thing about this lake is the d**n crew teams. Some days they are just everywhere. I just ordered a map of the reservoir, and can't wait to get it in the mail this week.

The tx on Sunday was a blast, new record with 27+ lbs! Thought we did well with 17+! caught fish in a lot of places with a lot of different presentations. People, like you said, get frustrated and leave but that place has alot of good fish. Good luck learning the res and a map is a good place to start.

If you got the gmco map then your going to love it...... it is very good.

I have only been skunked there once, so no frustration here. I need to spend a lot more time on this water though, it is a lot to learn.

Been fishing the res for 20+ years and it will humble you at the drop of a hat! It will also amaze you 20 minutes later!!

Haha you sound like the guy to go out there on a trip with all that experience.

My two biggest surprises out there (in summer #2, year #1) was last summer getting a backlash, working it on out, start reeling, and finding a nice fish on the end of line.

Surprise #2 was this early spring working a fluke shallow and a bird swooping down and scooping it right up and almost all the way to a tree before it dropped it.

I must say as a body of water it has a great mix of shallow structures, deep water structure, some of those great steep drop off right along the bank (and even some overhanging banks), man made stuff, and even some docks. Just about everything for whatever style or pattern you want to work.

I've been fishing the tx's since they started them and have been fishing there ever since. Pm me for some spots and lures to try! People are a bit protective about spots and patterns getting out on forums so I try not to broadcast things here. It is the place a lot of good sticks learned on because it offers so many diverse opportunities in one body of water that is not too large to cover with the right setup.
