horny toads

Featured Replies

Hello everyone.  Ok just bought some horny toads by zoom because the  bass here on Okeechobee have been going crazy over them.  So with that said here is my question  do you run the hook over the top of the frog or under it in the slit that is there.  Second question is why does my frog rule over on it's  back when I retrieve it and I had it hooked both ways.   One more question when the bass explode on my top water bait do I have to wait a second or so before trying to set the hook?  Can't wait to here your tips on my issue.

You want the hook point coming out of the back of the frog, letting the rest of the hook act as a keel. Try reeling at different speeds to avoid rolling the frog, or use a thicker hook like a gamakatsu superline.

Great bait!

I rig mine texas style with the hook point resting flat on the top of the toad.  I know many people use the Horny Toad special hook or a screw in hook, however I have found the Gammy Skip Gap hook to work the best.  It keeps the hook eye buried in the body of the toad very well.

When you get a blow up count in your head "one thousand" then let the fish have it!  If you don't wait then you will most likely pull the toad away from the fish....oh one other thing make sure your drag is locked!!!

The horny toad....one of my favorite baits. I don't have trouble with it rolling over, I use Zoom's 5/0 hooks for them though. Make sure the hook goes through the toad so that it lies on the back.

And for setting the hook, make sure you have a rod with some backbone to get a good hook set. When the fish explodes on the bait, I wait until I can feel the fish on the other end to set the hook. This has helped my hook up percentage greatly.  :(

I use a 4/0 wide gap skin hooked.  I avoid being impatient before setting the hook and make a med firm hookset, I don't want to jerk it away from the them.  My drag is med to med light, I just hold the line with my fingers.

Thanks for the advise everyone.  Can't wait to get out there and put these tips to work.

Your welcome. Those toads are some great baits, the Florida bass should like them.  :(

I use a 5/0 with a 1/16 weight on the hook for swimbaits with a burner reel an it comes right side up .

Horny toads are great baits for florida LMB.

I always carry them and have caught more nice sized bass on this bait in weedy conditions than any other lure.

My trick to keeping the frog from turning over is to pinch a 1/32 or 1/16th oz weight to the line about 2 inches from the nose of the toad.  It helps to get the bait on plane faster too.

Don't forget the basics though.  If it ain't rigged real straight it ain't gonna run straight.

I love me some horny toads.  I've got a small box dedicated to them.  I pretty much just use those 5/0 zoom screw in horny toad hooks and have no real issues.  Sure once in a while it flips over on a retrieve, but I don't think it really affects the action much.  I've yet to hop onto that rage-tail toad bandwagon yet just because I can catch fish on the zoom toads on a regular basis.  There is nothing more fun that watching a bass explode on one of those things.

bigger hook with small weight in front or get some of the double hook frog hooks.and when a bass slams it wait till you see them take it and go under with it then set your hook,or count to 3.nuttin like a topwater frog getting killed FUNNNNNN

Use the 5/0 Zoom Horney Toad hook that are designed specifically for the Horney Toads. I personally like the red hooks, but I guess it doesn't really matter much.

When I am rigging the Horney Toad I will screw the head of the bait onto spring until it reaches the end of the spring. After that, I will insert the hook right where the legs begin and come out the top of the bait with the hook and leave the hook sticking outside the bait, but make sure it is weedless!!!

To help reduce the bait from rolling over, I will keep my rod tip up high and reel at a steady speed. Keep in mind that the bait will still roll over, but this should reduce it.

When a bass does take the bait, wait about two seconds the set the hook HARD!!!!  Braided line does help, but you can use monofilament.
