Best Way To Change Treble Hooks

Featured Replies

how do you do it? short of a hack saw... B)

obviously the ones with split rings are relativley easy to change..

but the lures without split rings.... ??

is there a certain tool you use to get the hook off the lure?

i know i'll be adding a split ring to attach the new hook.

thanks..

Cut the hook off with linesman's pliers. Add a split ring, then add a hook.

ok.. thanks J.

the linesmans pliers is the answer to my question...

thanks..

Linesman pliers are a bit extreme. A good pair of diagonal cutters are sufficient. Also a good pair of split ring pliers will help too.

Split ring pliers are for opening the split rings up to attach the hook. They help, but not for cutting hooks. I don't see how a $6 pair of linesman pliers are "extreme." They're the tool you want, and won't wear out. They'll also cut through spinner bait wire, split rings, and are useful for making steel leaders for pike fishing.

agree.. i've got split ring pliers... good for their intent.. but certainly won't cut a hook off a lure.

thanks.. i appreciate your input..

i'll pick up a pair of the linesmans at Lowes tonight..

Never said split ring pliers would "cut" trebs off. Just saying if dude is changing trebes on a small to med size crankbait ( normally larger baits have split rings) linesman pliers are a bit cumbersome when it comes to getting the cutting part of the jaws to the part of the treb attached to the bait is all. A nice pair of dykes will do a better job with a small bait. Read, then comprehend.

Never had a problem with them. They're also great when your partner sticks a 5/0 worm hook in his hand, LOL.
