Fishing My Tiny Pond

Featured Replies

I have a little pond a couple of blocks from me that I've gone fishing in a couple of times, and I have have only ever caught a couple of tiny bass in it with some yum dingers and ton's of sunnies on hot dog and bread. I wanted to go fishing there again since it's the only place to fish for miles, but I don't know what the bigger bass want, if there are any. I dont have much tackle, I have some little sunfish and shad swimbaits, a little rapala floater (which wont work because of all the algae), a hula popper and a rage tail frog (which I won't use because nothing's big enough to hit them), and some plastic worms and powerbait minnows. I want to know if anyone can tell me what I should do to possibly catch a fish.

it sounds almost like the pond i fish at i love using a 3/8jig in black and blue works every time for me

but I don't know what the bigger bass want, if there are any

If you want to find out if there are in deed big bass in there try throwing one of those live sunfish you get.

I don't usually fish live bait for bass because I consider it feeding fish rather than catching fish. However, it's a great method to get an idea of how big the fish are.

You might be surprised at the results of that Rage Toad. Bass anywhere from a pound up will hit that thing. Sounds like a good place to toss it, too. Just make sure you use a 5/0 EWG hook to rig it.

huh? ever seen a 6" bass try and eat a 5" rapala? I have, and I'm sure others have too. Throw the biggest, baddest-looking bait you have.

I'd certainly have tried jigs with big trailers if I were you, and probably a weedless hudd or something. 6" or 7" senkos would be an excellent choice too. Texas rigged thumpers as well. Just throw something big, and work it real slow.

Do you have access to all of the pond?

Well that's what I would always do at the dock I worked at, but i've never been able to catch a small enough sunny at the pond to use as bait. The sunnies there aren't very small. That's what I tried to do one time before.

I can get to most of it, It's small enough so that I can cast something heavy all the way across it basically. I think it goes into a little stream farther down, but that's basically it. And what's a hudd?

Huddleston swimbait I suppose. this place sounds a lot like some local ponds around here. Full of stunted dinks. what I would do is throw something for the larger fish, jig, swimjig or your ragetoad and after about 30 min or so downsize to a finesse worm or grub and slay the dinks. It may not be what your looking for (catching larger fish) but it beats not catching anything. And who knows if there is some larger fish they may be more apt to hit the smaller more natural looking baits.

I'd throw that frog, and also try some swimbaits, flukes and the proper hooks can be had for next to nothing. I've had 6" fish hit a full sized buzz bait, bass are mean buggers, don't be afraid to throw bigger baits

dragging a jig works good i just caught my PB on that this morning :D

I agree with throwing the Rage frog since you already have it.

So I've heard, I caught two over there the last time I went that were about 5-6" on a 5" Dinger (cuz thats literally all I had), although I suppose that's more common.

But where was it and what kind of jig was it? This pond is very very small and has weeds and stuff on the bottom I believe. Anyway, nice! How much did it weigh? Got a picture?

Yeah, just set it up last night one of my rods, I have two, I'm putting a size six hook on the other for sunny fishing if the bass fishing is slow.

it was on the strike king promodel jig in green pumbkin color and it was around 7lbs. the pond i caught it at is the same way

yeah, a hudd is a huddleston deluxe. It's a trout profile soft plastic swimbait. The conventional size is 8". Now there's a 6" version, including a weedless 6".

Anyway, my point was to throw something big, and weed out some of the smaller bass. Bigger baits also have a larger drawing power. People throw 1 oz spinnerbaits and think the bait is moving a lot of water. Sure it does. But how much more water does a big paddletail swimbait move? 10 times? Maybe 20 times?

Also, remember that the biggest bass gets to choose the best location. If you're catching a ton of dinks, it's probably better to change locations.

Since you've access to the whole pond, you can cover all of the water. That's great. Now all you got to do is put something in front of that lunker, and present it so that she eats it.

Good luck!

everything you have will work, dont be afraid to throwbig lures at small bass in most cases they devour them :D
