How Much Boat Can I Fit Into 18 Feet?

Featured Replies

I live in community controlled by a Home Owners Assoc. They don't allow storage of boats out in the open. I have a short 2 car garage that is 18 ft in length.

Considering everything, the motor, boat, and trailer tongue, what is the maximum size jon boat am I looking for?

P.S. - This must go straight in. Cannot have it go in diagonal or my wife will hang my nuts out.

14 or 15' boat.

You can always knock the back wall of the garage out and make it bigger. Or just do a cutout for the motor and frame it in, I have seen several guys to that.

No can do. The basement stairs are right behind the garage.

You can also move, and/or get a new wife. Might not be a budget for a boat after that, though, LOL.

If it was on the right side you could still do it unless you have a room beneath the stairs. You would just have to do a cutout. That would not be hard to do. Especially if there is no drywall under the stairs.

I feel your pain.

My only option is to pay $200-$300 per month for local storage.

$200-$300??? What are you riding around in? A cruise ship LOL. I pay less than $60 a month for outdoor storage of a 17' boat.

Same issue with HOA. Keep in mind, if you get a small boat you'll have to stay away from a tilt trailer. A 12' boat will have a 20' trailer.

That sounds pretty pricey to store a boat. What is a tilt trailer??? I Googled it and it looks like something for cars.

My terminology may be wrong but it is a trailer with an extra long "nose" section. What it does is allow you to lift up the trailer at the hitch, and it will tilt at the wheels. The boat is set back from the tongue and there is usualy no wheel jack n the front.

The boat in the pic might be 12ft. As you can see the trailer tongue sticks out another 5 feet or so past the bow of the boat.
