Braided Line With Flouro/mono Leader

Featured Replies

i fish in a weedy lake thats pretty murkey. how long of a leader should i use for flouro? i use mono for backing. i mainly use swim jigs, texas rigs with braid.

A rods length will be more than enough.

A murky, weedy lake... I would not be using a leader at all.

I agree. If the water is heavily stained you may not need to use a leader.

If I use one it is about two to three feet long. :)

I like to use a leader, but it's not for visibility reasons alone. I keep the leader short enough so that the knot doesn't get into the reel, but long enough so that one leader lasts for two or three fishing trips (nicks, retying etc). For a 7+ ft rod - all my rods are longer than 7 ft, except my ultralight which is 6'6" - that means a leader length of 6 feet or so.

I always use a leader with braid ( mono too), I don't tie I use swivels and my leaders are about 15-18". I seldom change leaders for freshwater as I use duolocks but for saltwater I tie my lures so I may replace my leader a few times in an outing. Totally gave up on floro leaders, didn't see my strike ratio any better.

I always use a Floro leader with braid; but not so much for line visibility issue. I use it for abrasion resistance. If you are fishing rocks or heavy brush a floro leader will take the abuse much better than straight braid. Braid and rocks are a no-no, and heavy brush will weaken your braid as well, especially at the knot. using a bead on your line will also help the weight from pounding you knot on straight braid when T-rigging.

If the fish are pressured, I'd use a short leader (18 inches). If they are not particularly pressured and the water is really stained, I wouldn't use a leader at all.

I would add that braids are not very abrasion resistant. Consequently, muddy or not, I use a fluoro leader.

what # flouro leader should i use with 20# braid?

I'd get 15# - 17# test. I use 20# test with my 30# test PP. Works for me.

what # flouro leader should i use with 20# braid?

Match the diameter of your braid. In your case 8# Fluorocarbon will be the ticket. (Fireline Tracer Braid 20lb Diameter 0.23mm Seaguar InvisX 8lb Diameter 0.235mm)

The PE lines do a good job of cutting through weeds.
