So we decided to pack up and take the carolina skiff ( 22 footer center console with a 140 suzuki ) to holiday park this morning. We were on the water by 7:20 am. Equipped with live shiners, a dozen night crawlers, plastic worm rigs, rapalas, top water frogs, etc. As I was getting the shiners from the bait shop right near the dock, one of the guides told us not to waste any time around the docks and make way straight to the alley. So we did just that. We zoomed by every little jon boat and passed the sunpass toll on I-75 and were there in no time. We dropped the minn kota 66 lb thrust trolling motor in the water and began our descent down east. With all three of us attacking every kind of bait ( plastic worm, live shiner, and a rapala husky jerk ) I got a 8-9 inch bass the 3rd or 4th cast in using the husky. Thinking it was a hot spot we stayed in the area. Our assumption was wrong. All we heard were crickets. Completely dead. No bite. We decide to pull up and zoom a little further west past the sunpass toll. As we pass a dead carcass of an alligator, we decide to let the current take us down east again. Trolling with plastic worms, live shiners, the husky jerk, and a 2 piece rapala, we get nothing but vegetation until Mr. Gar decides to swallow the live shiner whole and take upon a fight. Estimated around 13-15 inches roughly two pounds. Not fund of seeing a gar instead of a nice bass, we let him go and hook another live shiner hoping to land a largemouth very soon. Captain peter tosses the shiner against the bank and sets the rod down. Meantime we switch to top water gear ( top water frog, top water rapala ) hoping to get action. Again - dead. No bite. The shiner rod again goes off and yet another gar is on. This one being a bit chunkier ( 16-18 inches, 4 pounds ) we are happy to be catching something. At the end of the day, we landed 3 gars, one bass. In one word - very slow production down in south florida. I for one, cant wait until the waters are going to cool down and pick back up again! Tight lines everybody. It's tough out there.

As far as the fishing goes, it's tough all over - they don't call it the dog days for nothing.

The reports I have been getting is that the Alley is dead. The problem now is that the water is way up and running. That is one of the most difficult scenarios for targeting bass in the glades. You should give Loxahatchee Preserve a shot. Guaranteed fish in there!

Shane, any more infor from the Holy Lands? You're right, Holiday and likewise the alley is a ghost town right now....

Try night fishing in the glades in the summer time. I had 16+ lbs and a 5.30 kicker at last Fri nights tourney at Holiday.Fishing was great.

Yes it was true that the sack was 30+...however they had abandoned the boat and fished the STA across the levee. Another angler did the same thing this past sunday and received a $250 citation and must appear in court. So if they say no fishing allowed thhey mean to enforce it. FWC had them on video so they are stone cold busted.

How has the fishing been out west on the alley at the turn around by the gas station. Sometimes the water movement isn't as bad out west. Any reports?

I fished that tourney as well, there were only a few of us..... You must have won with that bag...... I packed it in early, couldn't buy a fish....... Is the next nightowl on the 26th?

Ouch thats a hefty lesson to learn..... FWC don't play...

I regularly hunt in the STAs during hunting season and all I can say is that if you knew the size of the BASS in there you'd be tempted too. I think in the future they should open those natural resource areas up to fishing, even it is restricted to canoes, kayaks and such, it is a wonderful natural resource that should be utilized for us sportsmen.

Amen, Robert! I would LOVE to fish those STAs.

No offense to the duck hunters (I am one, myself) but it makes no sense why they let the duck hunters in there blasting around but not bass fishermen. Make it trolling motor only, catch and release. Heck charge me $20 per trip...I'd pay $20 to fish those things. $20 is what I pay extra in gas driving past the STAs to go to Okeechobee. It's not like the state couldn't use the added revenue.
