Introducing Kids Into Hunting

What age did u get your kids into hunting like take them out. My 2 yearold loves to watch hunting on tv and carries his toy gun around "shooting" monks(chipmonks) bucks and irdys(birds) then he balls if I go ground hog hunting and don't take him. Iv never taken him out because the .243 is loud and I don't want to scare him and turn him off from the sport. So I was thinking of taking him squirrel hunting with the .22 its quite and shouldn't be to bad of course ill be the one shooting them but taking him along I think he'd have a blast maybe let him just shoot the gun into the woods a few times sense he's way to young to actually hit anything. Plus I want to start him shooting bb guns in the yard to teach him safty and fundimentals.

Personally I started my kids & grandkids on BB guns at 4-5 under strict adult supervision and by 6-7 they were allowed to hunt black (rice) birds on their own. At 9-10 they were allowed to shoot/hunt with a 22 under strict adult supervision. I put them through hunter safety course at the earliest possible age.

The ages can vary from kid to kid since some are more responsible that others at an earlier age.

You bring your 2 year old hunting and you will most likely be on the news that night.

I started my boys out by just watching videos with them and pretending like we were the hunters. I let them use their toy gun. This taught them how to be quiet in the blind and where to aim on the deer. Then when they were old enough to walk safely through the woods I started taking them on walks with me in the woods to do some scouting. I let them carry a toy gun and started teaching them how to carry it safely and keep their finger off the trigger. I take them to the range starting at 5years old and let them shoot my 22 while sitting in my lap. That way I have total control of the gun. At 6, if they are ready I let them shoot from the bench with me within arms reach. I also get them their own BB gun. That's only if they are ready. I have a 7yo that is almost ready. He'll get his this year. Then if they are shooting well and have learned how to handle a gun safely I take them hunting with me.

Now when they've seen me shoot a few deer and I feel like they can handle it I let them be the shooter. I have a .243 for them to shoot but I let them practice shooting through a scoped 22 at the range. They don't shoot the .243 until they shoot a deer. This way they don't have a chance to get scared of the slight kick that the .243 has before they shoot a deer. When they are the shooter they don't get the gun until it's time to shoot. I carry it and keep it beside me the whole time. When we get into the blind we practice what we are going to do when it's time to shoot. We do this with an empty gun a few times. I place the gun into the proper window and he slides into position to shoot and when he's ready I take the safety off. That way when it's time to shoot we don't have to say a thing. It just happens.

This is my sons first deer. He made a perfect shot and was just 8 years old.

I was just gonna let him tag along with me and watch he's watched us shoot out back and he's good and sits and watches he knows not to touch daddys or papas guns. I was just gonna let him walk with me and if we see a squirrel ill pop it for him he's in the woods with me all the time walkign four wheeler trails. This is actually my wifes idea the one pushing for it probably cuz she hears him cry when I'm gone and I'm starting to entertain the though after months of argueing telling her no.

If you feel like he's ready for it then do it. You know him best.

That's my main deciding factor. If they are ready then do it. My boys start asking if they can come to deer camp as soon as they can talk. The rule has always been that as soon as they are potty trained they can go and camp with me. That's when they get started.

I think I'm gonna wait I don't want to have him start throwing a fit wanting to shoot because my guns real and his ain't and me having to yell at him and not like it. That's how fishing went his first trip he used my revo and veritas because I was dumb enough to bring it and obviously its better then his sponge bob pole he had to have it. No hunting for him till he's got his bb gun and can kill a pop can lol.
