Elkhorn Creek

Featured Replies

Anyone ever fish the elkhorn creek for smallmouths? Or even have any advice for a small river/large creek smallmouth fishing. This creek is well known for it's smallmouth population and size, however, I mostly catch largemouth bass, good size too! I love the fight of a small though. I have only caught about 4 or 5 of them but would like to find where the bog ones are and what bait and presentation works best for them. I fish mostly from a kayak. The structure of the water is plentiful with huge Dams/ waterfalls, and a few nice deep spots and a few fallen trees / brush. Not much grass. Occasionally you will encounter a large rock ledge that the water seems to flow underneath. The current is extremely slow where I fish mostly, will they be more toward te rapids? Any words of caution on fishing from a kayak so as not to spook them? Should I fish up stream or down stream for effectiveness? Consider me a novice on everything to do with this subject.

Thanks a bunch

i would try light jig 1/8oz. baby brush threaded up the hook for trailer. fish will likely be in eddies behind rocks or in shade, so cast up and bring down stream.lightest line possible or floro. top water too! there was a segment on ky afield, so you might be able to find it or utube stream fishing.

I fished the Elkhorn about a month ago , it was 80 something degrees and sunny, was catching 12 to 15 inch Smallies on a 1/4 oz jig bouncing off the bottom in the deep eddies, and a red crank bait in the shallower areas. I talked to other people and they were using buzz baits and 3 in grubs. Good luck and post some pics.

Where were you fishing at? From shore, wading, kayak?? Where did u access the elkhorn at?

I fished from a canoe, went threw the Canoe Kentucky Outfitters and did the six mile trip, we did the early morning trip i think we put in around nine and fished all day. They are very nice people and you can rent a canoe or kayak . Though i did pull over and fish the bank several times. Good Luck !!
