Best Techniques To Retrieve Lures.

Featured Replies

I am curious on this.

What is the best way to retrieve a fishing lure. For example do you retrieve it in one direction or do you change your direction when bringing the lure back to the boat?

Also when it comes to jerks, how many do you use at a time?

Whats the best way to fish spinnerbaits? Retrieve and then pause technique correct?

-I change the direction with my rod tip. I try to make it as eradic as possible.

-No real number, If the fish want a jerkbait they will tell you. That is one of those things you have to experiment with.

-No real wrong way, you can catch fish chucking and winding, stop and go, also try fishing a spinnerbait like you would a jerkbait.

gk is on point.

You're already cognizant about different retrieve techniques, the main thing to do is get the lure wet first and let the fish tell you how they want it on a given day. With most lures I start off fast to locate fish and see if they're active. If that doesn't work, then I slow down and/or would use some variation of a stop and go retrieve. These are for reaction type baits, if all else fails then I'm working with a much slower, methodical presentation...jig, tube, worm...those type of lures.

jigfishin has another good point. Find cover /structure with moving baits (spinnerbaits, crankbaits) pick off the aggressive fish, then pick apart every little nook and cranny with worms, tubes and slow presentations.

Many people, including myself, believe that you want to give a spinnerbait a very erratic retrieve, with frequent, short pulses and pauses, so that the blade is not just spinning, but constantly fluttering. Just a little twitch of the rod tip every half second or second, with a half second or 2 second pause thrown in about every 5 seconds gets the job done for me. I almost never retrieve a spinnerbait in a straight line, but I will give it a shot if the erratic retrieve isn't working.
