In the near future, maybe a couple of years away, we are thinking of moving to NC. We would be looking in the Raleigh area. I see Falls Lake is north of Raleigh and would like some opinions on this lake and/or other lakes in the area. I would love to be near a nice smallie lake. I would appreciate any input on towns or cities to live. Thanks Al

Small mouth bass is not so popular in that area of the state. Although I've heard that Falls of the Neuse does have them. 'Round there the Largemouth bass and Crappie are the two main targets. If you have a boat, Kerr Lake is near there for some great Stiped bass fishing. Just west of Raleigh, 'bout two and a half hours, is some better smallmouth action. In the mountain area of Boone or West Jefferson. There's also some great trout waters there.

Like Lesley said the Raliegh area is better for Largemouth and crappie. There are plenty of very nice large lakes around Raleigh, like Shearon Harris, Jordan Lake, Falls etc. Smallmouth fishing is better back West past Winston Salem and Southwest into Asheville. Lake James has smallmouth but it is a very clear lake and it is hard to catch smallies. Jordan Lake has stripers but we had a lot of them die this past summer with the temperature exceeding 100 degrees many days out of the summer.

You will not find any small mouth without at least a 4 hour drive of Raleigh, the water is too warm. Shearin Harris is a good big bass lake. Jordan lake has a good fishery for large mouth and stripers. There are some smaller water sheds such as lake wheeler and other county ran lakes. Many choices.

Not sure exactly how many people are on here from NC, seems like its mostly NOVA and Fl guys that frequent this section. I would suggest you go to www.ncangler.com Definately not to take away from this site, but you will be able to find out more specifics for what you are wanting.

Raleigh is in my opinion a goood choice. There are excellent lakes within less than an hour of the city. Kerr, gaston and falls to the north. Shearon harris to the south. Jordan and norman not to far on the west. Lots of rivers to the east

The post above is spot on for lmb, but you won't catch a smallie any where near there.

Piedmont is where it's at for LMB.

How is everyone doin in the NC region?

Falls is great early, bite shuts off quick for me once the sun comes up. What about the other lakes?

Big A123, Smallies, if you want to catch them on rivers. Try the Dan River, Smith's River, Hyco River , Stauton River, Yadkin River, New River is the Best,Uwharrie River, Broad River. The Best Lakes are Bugs Island lake, James, W.Kerr Scott, Hickory,Rhodhiss,like others stated best chances for SmallMouth Bass is beyound Winston Salem, mainly the Foothills and the Mountain areas. Hope this helps out.

Went out this past weekend, local reservoir in durham,nc...def post-spawn. All males were caught didn't get a bass over 2lbs. The barometric pressure was high fri and sat, caught about 8 on carolina rig main points.
